ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) and the Water and Sewerage Department (W&SD) will be merged in 2025.

This was announced by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) during the 2025 Budget Address on Monday, November 11, 2024, during the Twenty-first Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA).

“This merger will consolidate skillsets and leverage the established leadership and infrastructure of BVIEC to promote efficient water production, transmission and distribution as well as effective collection and disposal of wastewater,” Premier Wheatley said.

More effective W&SD

He explained that the new organisational structure will emphasise accountability and agility to ensure that the evolving needs of the territory are met effectively.

According to the Premier, the merger is part of the government’s third national goal, which is high-quality and resilient infrastructure and access to sustainable services.

“This is crucial for economic development and in 2025 my government will continue pressing forward with efforts to improve the Territory’s infrastructure to deliver reliable services to residents and to transition to sustainable energy,” the Premier said.

They want home owners who have personal cisterns to contribute too but not receive services from the public water “supply” . Bundle electricity & water as a single bill base rate taxing every household as if it’s being supplied.

Instead of fixing departments, this accidental party premier thinks merging is the solution. They jumbled up and merged the Ministries, they merged festival to tourism board, merging water and sewerage to Electricity now. Fix the darned problems!

Whoever came up with this idea need to go back and rethink it over and over again before it is implemented. Say I say, it will not work. The consequences will be dire. These two entities need to remain as they are.

Only if water can demonstrate their efficiency. Otherwise they will mess up the efficiency of BVIEllectric which is quite smooth and efficient.
Even if Mr Smith.of BVIElectrjc heads up the merger water's employees trained andcembeddex in doing what does not work, will be a challenge to the whole. Not a good Idea un l ess the efficiency could be guaranteed.
