ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Balancing opening hours with giving staff time to take care of their personal matters in the 7-hour window of operation permitted in the phased soft opening of the Virgin Islands is seen as the main challenge for businesses.

Interim Chairman of the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association (BVICCHA) Ms Shania B. Smith alluded to the challenges during a social media interview aired on Wednesday, April 29, 2020.

The balancing act

The curfew is lifted daily from 6:00am to 1:00pm to allow the public to access essential supplies and services.

“One of the other concerns that we have right now is from a standpoint of trying to meet the needs of customers to allow your employees to be able to do their personal business and be home within the curfew.

"We find it a little bit restrictive,” Ms Smith said.

BVICCHA wants curfew relaxed for 12 hours daily

The interim chair of the BVICCHA said the Association has proposed to the Government for the lifting of the curfew for a duration of 12 hours daily.

“Then we know that persons have enough time to get into their business. We have additional measures around sanitation that you have to do every day and even constantly throughout the day, so it is important that enough time is given for that and you abide by whatever the regulation is for the curfew order and putting that into place.”

Ms Smith also alluded to a number of challenges being brought to bear by the business sector, adding that adopting the guidelines set out for the phased reopening of the Territory has put a cost factor on all businesses.

“Having gone without revenue for, maybe the last four to six weeks, it’s going to be a challenge for some.”

Marine sector approved to operate

Meanwhile, Ms Smith said the BVICCHA is happy to see the most recent update to the essential businesses list including the marine sector.

“The marine sector was left off and they have some immediate concerns…we are a month out from hurricane season and they have to start to prep their boats to either leave the Territory or haul out and get them secured in time for June.”

Ms Smith added that implications around insurance is also a main concern for those in the marine sector, “As far as making sure the boats are safe.”

Is she trying to get all of us infected and killed? 12 hours to be in public is undoing everything our Premier has done to protect us. No way 12 hours is needed or wanted.

There is a solution to every situation. The most viable one in this situation will be to have staff work on a shift system. e.g. Week 1 - some staff work for 3 days
Week 2 - some staff work 2 days etc. and alternate accordingly.

This allows for flexibility during the week so that all employees get to take care of their personal matters.

I keep sensing that persons just do not get the fact that things are not normal so adjustments must be made.

I hope this is what the chief will declare this weekend. Curfew 6pm-6am. Makes good sense along with all the measures in place. Politics and where you are from colours everything in the BVI. There is no respect for the person or other persons point of view.

Have a look around town and the different neighbourhoods and tell me what you see.

It's like another ordinary day of cooling' out with the boys with no mask or mask as a headband or chain and huddled in discussion.

If some don't know how to follow simple instructions imagine what they'd do with an extended curfew.

Give an inch they take a yard.

Y’all are some hateful people. What’s this attack on this young lady’s character for stating not even her personal opinion, but the opinion of the bviccha? If you don’t like her that’s fine, but no need to launch an unnecessary personal attack. If you disagree with the suggestion that’s also fine, but be respectful about your disagreement. Goodness.
