TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has said the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) has been intentional in stepping up to bring more airlines into the Virgin Islands to increase the availability of intra-regional travel.

Hon Rymer was speaking at a ceremony following LIAT 2020 Limited’s inaugural flight to the VI on Sunday, December 8, 2024.

“From the airports' standpoint we were quite intentional in terms of intra-regional travel as we want to make it easier for persons to be in and out of our Territory,” the minister stated.

LIAT 2020’s ATR 42, 48 seater landed with twenty-four passengers and four crew members at the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport with LIAT 2020 Limited’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ms. Hafsah Abdulsalam on board.

LIAT is ‘very important to us’- Hon Rymer

“I am happy that LIAT 2020 is here…and it just speaks to the relationship that LIAT has with our Virgin Islands. We’re a destination where we have a lot of our Caribbean brothers and sisters that traverse through here and the rest of the Caribbean so LIAT is very important to us and we acknowledge this partnership and we welcome this partnership,” Hon Rymer said.

LIAT he added has always been a good partner to the VI dating back to when LIAT 1974 was in operation.

“LIAT [1974] was the airline of choice for the Caribbean and we are sure that you offer those same services and we welcome that,” Hon Rymer stated.

The Communications and Works Minister also thanked the team at BVIAA led by Managing Director Mr Kurt A.G. Menal and also the Chairman of the BVIAA board Mr Theodore E. Burke for staying “diligent to the plan in terms of making sure we have travel and different options”.

LIAT will operate regular flights from Beef Island with an introductory one-way fare starting at $99.00 for a limited time.

The staff at the airport should be paid a decent salary, its not easy dealing with ungrateful customers and then work overtime without pay.
