ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Some school sports history was created on Sunday, February 23, 2025, when the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School in Sea Cows Bay included archery in its Inter-House Sports Programme for the first time.
Archery made up the list of field events at A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground and saw 16 archers from Forms 1 to 5 aiming to give their houses valuable points ahead of the track events on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the same venue.
The archers, both boys and girls, shot from a distance of 10 metres.
‘Momentous occasion’
“The addition of archery to this year’s Sports Day is truly a momentous occasion for the school. Sports Day is all about the students and giving students the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents in different sporting events and our Archery which is a recognized sport has been a fantastic way to engage students who have a passion for the sport.
“So It was only natural to incorporate archery into the list of events, especially since the Schools’ Archery Club is always welcoming new members,” Physical Education (PE) Teacher at the BVI SDA School Mr Pamphill Prevost stated.
The PE Teacher also noted that the BVI SDA School has qualified teachers in the archery discipline.
‘Overwhelming’ response from students & parents
“Furthermore, at the SDA, during the 2nd term at the high school level participating in a minimum of 3 events is a requirement for passing the Physical Education subject. So, by adding archery to the list of events, students who are not necessarily comfortable with running or jumping now have an option they can enjoy.”
Mr Prevost added that the response from both parents and students has been overwhelmingly positive, and the archers have embraced this opportunity with excitement and enthusiasm.
Equally excited was the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) Coordinator in the Virgin Islands, Ritseeniyah Georges-Haughton.
‘Archery is a sport for all’- NASP Coordinator
“After 7 years of VI NASP being in our local schools, we have two schools that have included archery as part of their sports day (Cedar International is the other). For archery to be included for sports day the youth made a request to their school officials. This shows the enjoyment that the youth have with the sport.”
Georges-Haughton said archery is a sport for all and looks forward to more schools doing the same.
“There are many forms of archery and we are only introducing the sport and teaching a life skill. It was a joy to be a part of this day with BVI SDA School," he continued.
“As we have now partnered with the VI Field Archery Federation, we are looking forward to the upcoming invitational on 2nd March and our annual VI NASP Nationals on the 4th of May,” Georges-Haughton added.
