‘BVI Love’ slogan was insincere & a political gimmick – Hon Flax-Charles

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Territorial At Large Member in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA) and Ninth District Candidate under the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles has called the ‘BVI Love’ tourism slogan a political gimmick when it came out under the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government in 2020.

Hon Flax-Charles, a former VIP member, was speaking on the PVIM’s solution time radio show, on April 19, 2023, on ZBVI 780 AM on the need for more cohesion amongst VI’s local and expatriate population. 

The BVI Love slogan was unveiled by the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board (BVITB) on Monday, September 21, 2020, as part of a brand campaign to bolster the VI’s image locally, regionally, and abroad to focus on what makes the VI a special destination and business jurisdiction.

'BVI Love' slogan wasn't sincere- Hon Flax-Charles 

According to the then Premier Andrew A. Fahie, who at the time was the minister responsible for tourism, the mantra of BVI LOVE was intended to be an expression of the mission of his administration to create a Green VI where all residents and all people love 'living green'.

According to Hon Flax-Charles, “That BVI Love that came out in 2019 or 2020, it was a political gimmick, it wasn’t sincere it didn’t come from the heart.

Hon Flax-Charles added, “But I can say to you that they are people who have come here to this country and have embraced our culture, embraced our people and there are a lot of our people who have embraced these people,” she added.

Hon Flax-Charles, while a member of the VIP, never publicly criticised the slogan.

      There are female candidates who do not have the troubled past of many of these women, Elvira etc.

      Lorna and Ingrid are two honest, intelligent and experienced candidates. ( although in different parties but that should make no difference as Ronnies lot are really NDP light )

      They have my vote and if you want honest capable government they should have yours

    I like the slogan. Nothing is wrong with it except this woman and her sister who was over Tourist Board feel as if nothing is good in tourism unless they agree and sanction it. They seem to think they alone know about tourism.

    Ms. Flax, I believe you and felt that all along. The problem is I am kinda tired of hearing Politicians talking about knowing something was wrong at the time it was done or said but never addressed it at the time but waited until they are up for re-election to start to sing. It seem wrong to me.

    I don't know what got in her mind to go run district. This woman had such a golden opportunity as an at large candidate she blew it. Man power can't get to our heads. Man just humble and let the process take place while you think and reconsider your action then come up with understand and wisdom. It appears that arrogance have gotten the best of us which is sad.

    I have so much love and respect for this fighter but it appears that she made a mistake. No love lost but I'm very disappointed in the move she made I'm just been real. What and who influence her move I don't know if it was wise counsel.

    Tell us more for us to believe you seems to have the facts. Tell us who are the the parties involved in this mess.who say this is true?

    Probably you didnt take care of them enough to know they needed funds to take care of their needs. These petty talks on the elderly could be questionable so put more meet on the bone for the public to believe.

    Politics is a cesspool filled with deceit, treachery and betrayal. This tory is akin to the fable of the fox and the grapes. As the story goes, the fox was trying all day to pick some grapes high up in the tree. After trying and trying well into the evening, the fox declared the grapes were sour any way. The BVI Love tory slight would have more teeth perhaps if it were thrashed early, not seconds before a general election. Furthermore, of the myriad of real problems facing the BVI, the Hon Flax-Charles chose a slogan to highlight for her closing arguments. This political campaign is emblematic for candidates waxing generalities sometimes in a nonsensical manner. It is void of specific policies, programmes, procedures, processes, projectd, etc, with cost and timelines. By the way , how does Hon Flax -Charles know what is in someone ‘s heart? Does she have unique talent and ability? The BVI needs 13 of its best and brightest, not just in education, but in public affairs, governing, political strategy, unselfishness, interpersonal skills, communication skills, etc, to set it on a new course. This is no time for foolishness. It is time for action. It is time to deliver/put up or shut the h…l up. It is time to build on the legacy of Christopher Fleming, Theodolph Faulkner, H. L. Stoutt, Noel Lloyd and PAM, and other trailblazers. It is time shed the colonialism yoke. Meritorious manumission can’t shed that yoke. It will take one BVI—BVI ????.

        Meritorious manumission means earned freedom.During Slavery, a slave could earn special privileges for snitching on another slave(s). It was not intentded to make blacks more self-supporting but keeping them under control. It still exists in the BVI. Some still run to Government House carrying news on other Virgin Islanders. The partake in bring cum carry.

    She can make noise and I guess its how she get things done but there is a time and place for everything. when you are a minister you have to humble yourself, do not be rude because as a minister you have to deal with different people with different mentality. She can get the job done but needs to change her attitude at times. she needs a training in customer service like the one TISS they had a few years ago.

    She talking about the slogan. BVI the truth is the person who created the "Nature's Little Secret" trademarked it and the BVI can't use it any more ask anyone who works in Tourist Board; so it not a Fahie gimmick but a legal one we didn't have one so they came up with one quickly "BVI Love".
