HARBOUR ROAD WANCHAI, Hong Kong- Students from the Virgin Islands (VI) who are studying abroad as part of the BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme were treated to Christmas lunch last Saturday, December 21, 2024.

The BVI Hong Kong Office brought together its staff, the BVI Financial Services Commission in Hong Kong and the students for its annual Christmas Lunch.

According to a press release, Director of the BVI Hong Kong Office Dr Ricardo Wheatley said the gathering provided a warm and meaningful opportunity for students to connect with one another as well as celebrate the season.

“We are thrilled to bring together our students and staff here in Hong Kong for this special event. The continued growth of the BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme is a clear reflection of the talent and ambition of the next generation of BVI leaders,” Dr Wheately added.

Student support will continue- Dr Wheatley

He also said they will continue to support VI students as they continue to excel both academically and professionally.

The scholarship programme he added continues to expand each year as the number of students joining the initiative continues to increase.

The BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme supports VI students pursing studies in Asia, providing tuition fee support.

Dr Wheatley explained that the programme also fosters cross-cultural exchange, broadens academic horizons, and strengthens the VI’s long-term investment in the future of its young people.

He further stated that this year’s event marks another successful milestone for the scholarship programme, which plays a pivotal role in offering students valuable international exposure, academic experiences, and personal development.

The BVI Hong Kong Office is grateful for your positive comments. The BVI's Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme was began by BVI Hong Kong Office Director Dr. Ricardo Wheatley in 2021, with support from the former Minister of Education, Dr. the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley. The administrative staff assisting in the projects launch was Ms. Xyrah Wheatley (now Assistant Secretary - International Affairs Secretariat), and advisement coming from Dr. Marcia Potter (Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education). We welcomed our first students in August 2023, and this was our second BVI Christmas Dinner in Hong Kong. While Honourable Lorna Smith served as BVI Hong Kong Office Director 10 years ago in 2014, she was very pleased to greet our students on her BVI Government delegation visit to Hong Kong in May 2024. In his transition to Premiers & Minister of Finance, Dr. Hon. Wheatley continues to support and push the Asia Study Abroad Programme into the present.

I am curious about how much money the gov put into this?and would they return to serve the country,I recall the gov spent close to $80,000 to send close relatives/studen 7 years ago to Canada to study and they never return to serve /either repay, why not send your student to Cuba to be proper doctors and nurses, why not send them to guyana to learn how to do proper farming and agriculture, I don't see how Hong Kong will benefit tortola infrastructure, because the type of facilities and production those countries produce tortola is like a third world,

Participating student's in BVI's Asia Abroad Programme receive tuition and housing waivers from the Universities themselves due to BVI being the only Caribbean representation in their institutions. Students must meet the academic requirements to enter the university and go through a scholarship interview process to ensure they have a strong desire to return and contribute to the BVI. BVI students study have the wonderful experience of studying alongside international students from Latin America, Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, broadening their knowledge of the world. We encourage interested persons to apply at the BVI Hong Kong Office website.
