ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Athletes from the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) who competed in the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympics, have indicated that they will not be returning to the territory anytime soon for various reasons.

The news comes amidst some community criticisms that the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) should have delayed the motorcade until the return of the athletes.

The VI Olympians speaking via a Zoom conference call last evening August 4, 2021, all indicated that they have no plans to travel to the VI now.

Woman’s Long Jump finalist Chantel E. Malone said her return to the VI will depend on her athletic schedule, which does not allow for it at the moment.

Commitments

Kyron A. McMaster, who finished 4th in the 400m Hurdles final, said his athletics season is still active with more races scheduled; however, he said at the end of the season he plans to take a vacation to the VI.

Swimmer Elinah Phillip who placed second in her heat is currently in London and said she plans to return to Miami for the start of a new season.

Phillip indicated, however, that if it fits into her schedule, she will return to the VI sometime.

As part of celebrations reportedly organised by Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Junior Minister for Tourism Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL), hundreds of vehicles lined the roadways in the grand motorcade throughout the territory to celebrating the accomplishments of the four Olympians, including Junior Olympian Adaejah Hodge.

Words to describe the reports that the public criticizing the motorcade to celebrate the Olympians athletes is ridiculous. I want to give my unswerving support to those persons who organize the celebration and the parade. As American athletes won medals in their various disciplines, there were communities from where the athletes belong had several celebrations while the athletes were in Japan. We in the Virgin Islands need to wake up and put on a positive posture if we want other athletes to be motivated for future success.

There could only be one be one government at a time. When those persons get the opportunity to lead the country then they will do whatever they have plans for. In Grenada there was a celebration for Kirani James who won a bronze medal in the Olympics in men's 400 meter race and he was not there to join in the celebration. You could imagine what took place in Jamaica. Jamaicans in the B.V.I were celebrating their athletes who were successful at the games. What is important is that the country acknowledged the success of these athletes. While we are criticizing and trying to politicizing every little thing other countries are moving forward. Let us ask those critics for a small donation to assist anyone of the athletes and I am sure many of them will not assist. Who the cap fits let them wear it.

Here is an insightful short pice on YouTube outlining WHY Olympians are so broke...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZatBRfMnxUE

Its a hard and expensive way to make a living! So, we can talk national pride and all that but until we start to tangibly put some $$$ towards these guys expenses and assist in expenses like training, therapy, etc. don't blame 'em for being busy and travelling to the next meet... its an expensive game.

They could do with much more than vague promises of support or sinking a ton of money into infrastructure (like a proposed Olympic sized swimming pool costing untold millions in construction costs and then millions more in maintenance fees and kickbacks). Why not spend some of that NOW on supporting this and the next generation of athletes actual expenses?

All said... big ups and much respect to Kyron, Chantel, Elinah and those greats whose shoulders they stood on (Dion, Tahesia and more). You guys took a little and gave us bach much... we applaud and respect you!
