Bulldogs win sets up game 5 in EE/LL bball league finals
The Bulldogs were down 1-2 in the finals but defeated 49th Street 56-50 when the teams clashed for game four at the Belle Vue gym last evening.
This was despite David Lettsome’s game leading 17 points for 49th Street. He matched this with 8 rebounds but received very poor support from his team mates as no one else emerged in double figures.
Bulldogs coach, Vince N. Pickering, attributed to the win to his team sticking to their game plan, “…they were getting what they want so we decided to come with a zone and force them to beat us shooting jump shots.”
The Bulldogs ran away with the game during the first half, building as much as a ten point lead against 49th Street, but a late surge saw a brief lead change and lifted the spirits of the very vocal crowd who saw some actual competition in the making.
Cedric King and Travis Isaac both led the Bulldogs’ scoring with 14 points while Deon Smith had 13 points. King also grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.
Coach Wasi Charlesworth of 49th Street said his team’s loss was due to a bit of ‘selfish ball’ on the team’s part and opined that this needed to change in order for the team to emerge Champions in the deciding game 5.
“Our team played a lot of selfish ball and everybody wants to be the star. Our thing is to attack, we went out there shooting a heap of jump shots so the just let the game run away from them,” Charlesworth said.
Earlier, Franklyn Penn’s 19 points was not enough for victory as Squad Up pulled off a nail biter to defeat the ESHS-Rams 63-61 in overtime play. Roger Farrington scored 17 points and Nathaniel Malone threw down 14 points of his own to secure victory in the exhibition match for Squad Up.
The game five decider will be held tomorrow, Sunday February 9, 2014 from 6:30PM at the Belle Vue gym where it expected that the champions will be crowned and the finals MVP announced.
