ACCRA, Ghana, Africa- Two British citizens have been arrested after being accused of attempting to smuggle $6.48m (£5m) worth of cocaine from Ghana to London.

According to the BBC, around 166kg (366lbs) of the substance was seized at Kotoka International Airport in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, on Monday, June 10, 2024.

The suspects were scheduled to board a British Airways flight to London Gatwick Airport.

Ghana’s Narcotic Control Commission alleges that the pair hid the cocaine, which was cut into 72 slabs, across six suitcases.

The commission and the UK Crime Agency conducted the sting operation together, the BBC reported.

Major cocaine busts in UK; Is the UK corrupt?

It was in June last year that a haul of 1.6 tonnes of cocaine disguised as charcoal and worth over £120m was seized at a port in the United Kingdom (UK).

The drugs were found among 800 sacks of charcoal on a ship that arrived into London Gateway port from Panama, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said, adding that the Class A drug was found by Border Force officers.

In October 2022, bags of cocaine, with a reported street value of up to £90 million, washed up on a UK beach.

According to Dyfed-Powys Police, around 30 bags of the Class A drug were found by a dog walker on a beach south of Aberystwyth, tied to makeshift buoys.

The UK’s love affair with cocaine was again placed in the limelight on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2021, when a £184 million drug haul was busted in banana imports from Colombia.

In another major bust, some 1,060 kilograms of cocaine, worth £100 million was found hidden in banana-related shipments in Essex in November 2020.

In September 2020, two British men attempted to transport $278,000 worth of cocaine from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom on jet skis, however, they ran out of fuel during their return journey and were caught by the British coast guard.

Many more drug busts continue to surface in the United Kingdom (UK), yet the country has not been labelled as corrupt by the UK Press and other high-profile government officials over the drug busts.

Ex-governor of the Virgin Islands (VI) Augustus J. U. Jaspert had labelled the Virgin Islands (VI) as corrupt following the discovery of some $250m worth of cocaine on Tortola in early November 2020.

The label came ahead of an announcement of a Commission on Inquiry into the VI Government based on allegations of corruption; however, Mr Jaspert had never publicly referred to his home country as corrupt, given its frequent high-profile drug busts.

There are drug busts all over the world every day. It doesn't make the BVI in the right if the UK has similar problems. Stop the nonsense!

Here are the BRITS defending themselves and trying to make it look like someone else. Transparency for who? Where is the autopsy for the UK officer, they found dead at the waterfront? Tell me what happen to the million that Jaspert gave to the police.

What is the point of this story on BVI news? Are you suggesting that British people don't know that British people engage in illegal importation of drugs? Are you suggesting British people do it ... so its ok? The most pathetic type of whataboutery there is.

Anyone, anywhere (including BVI and BVIslanders) found guilty of illegal activity deserve to face the full brunt of the law.

Yes but the difference is it’s not the King or the Prime Minister that’s trying to smuggle the drugs in to the Uk! Doh!

The difference is that they actually welcome the effort to stop the drugs trade instead of considering it an assault on their "economy and culture". Who is corrupt again?

Yes, everywhere does it. But I'm sure the majority of the population isn't painted with a broad brush due to the actions of a few. Haven't you heard? Everyone in the VI is a drug dealer.

The difference is we donot know who the real culprits in the BVI are. These drugs and guns coming through from far. Locals are the small fish. How come the big fish never get caught.

Since 2018, the RVIPF (about 200 Officers) have seized more cocaine than all 44 UK Home Office Forces (about 170,000 Officers) combined. During the same period there have been more BVI nationals (population 31,000) than UK nationals (population 67,000,000) arrested in possession of more than 100kg. Now that make a better headline.
