BREWERS BAY, Tortola, VI- It was last year, following Tropical Storm Philippe, residents of Brewers Bay complained that no one in government was paying them any attention. Roads were eroded, ghut elements had run into the beach, water was settled in the low-lying areas causing a huge increase in mosquitoes, and rocks and fallen trees were seen everywhere.

Months after our newsroom article, ‘Brewers Bay, the Forgotten City’, the Public Works Department and other public sector agencies made an effort to clean up the area.

Brewers Bay on the move

Their efforts have not stopped and today, October 16, 2024, more works are ongoing to fix the roads to ensure proper drainage. Most of all, after some seven years following hurricanes Irma and Maria, their community centre is now being repaired.

Works have started on the George W. Christopher Community Centre by E & K Trucking and Construction Services Limited to restore it. It is an important structure to the residents as it is used by senior citizens, for after-school programmes, a clinic, and as a hurricane shelter to name a few.

Our roving camera caught up yesterday, October 15, 2024, with Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), the Minister for Health and Social Development, whose portfolio includes the community centres.

Minister Wheatley, who was at the time visiting the damaged community centre, noted that he has been working hard since returning to office in 2023 and a few days ago he just turned over the Cane Garden Bay Community Centre. "It clearly demonstrates the government's commitment that no district will be left behind is practised," the Minister opined.

Both Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay are in the Second District, which is represented by an Opposition legislator.

Brewers Bay, located on the northwest side of Tortola, is well-known for its campgrounds and Icis Villas. It has one of the most pristine beaches on Tortola.

The Government threaten the businesses on the beach at Brewers Bay, while they are pumping money in Vybz Kartel.

Sorry, not impressed. I need to see a lot more work done. The place is a wilderness.

If you are speaking of Brewers Bay, that place has always been a wilderness. Just be thankful.

So what happened to Carrot Bay? No community centre,no school, bad roads, the sea will destroy the homes that line the main road. The quiet as a mouse refrain is "the gouwerment ain got no money. Lard, the poor first district ain got no body

When down west had the person with the purse strings you all still got nothing. I can see a Community Centre needed yes but what school. Leonora Delville still have plenty space. Most Carrot Bay students go to the Seventh Day Adventist school in Sea Cows Bay. Start preparing yourself for next election so you can be the "body" that is needed to see the action you want.

Districts will not progress at a steady rate until they are propelled by their residents. District Representatives don't have the resources or commitment to sustain and move them forward. Progress is with people.

Remove those illegal bars off the beach and keep cruise ship tourists going to CGB.

It may be neglected like other areas outside of Road Town, the capital city, but is Brewers Bay a city or a little hamlet? If it is a city, can it generate adequate revenue to meet its recurring needs, ie, roads, water, sewage, education, health, solid waste collection, public safetyetc. Or those needs have to be shared and met collectively with the rest of the territory. Nonetheless, Brewers Bay should get its collective share of services, etc. Services should not be allocated by geography but by needs.

By the way, how did Brewers Bay get its name? Did Brewers Bay had sugar cane distillery(s)? Is there a bay in St. Thomas by the same name?

Brewers Bay is one of our favorite beaches but the roads to get there are terrible, glad to see some attention is finally being given, long overdue

Please fix ALL of the road on each side of the bay and "finally" pave it as well.

put back that ridiculous shape high roof that no one can reach and so much wasted space. A whole other floor can fit in there. Same thing Sea Cow's Bay. New ideas please. Brewers Bay also faces the North Atlantic.

It's wonderful to see Brewers Bay finally getting the attention and care it deserves, especially with the restoration of the George W. Christopher Community Centre and improvements to the roads. These efforts will surely make a significant difference for the community!
