ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Breast, colon and prostate cancers are among the most prevalent in the Virgin Islands (VI). This information comes as the Territory joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Cancer Day today, Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) in a statement today said, in light of this, “We must be proactive and prioritise screening and early detection.”

This year's World Cancer Day is being observed under the theme ‘Unite by Unique’, highlighting the value of individualised, patient-centred care in the fight against cancer.

“On this World Cancer Day, we must come together as a community with one voice, standing united in the fight against cancer,” Hon Wheatley added.

VI working with PAHO

Hon Wheatley also said the Ministry is working with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) to eliminate cervical cancer as part of regional initiatives in the Americas.

“Through increased HPV vaccination, expanded screenings, and timely treatment, we aim to eradicate cervical cancer,” he added.

While cancer affects all, Hon Wheatley is encouraging all to make informed choices, prioritise screenings, and support organisations like the BVI Cancer Society.

“We can save lives and build a healthier Virgin Islands. Let’s not wait until cancer affects someone that we love to take action. I encourage everyone to take charge of their health, schedule screenings, make healthier choices, and spread awareness,” he added.

Support the BVI Cancer Society

Hon Wheatley said the ‘Unite by Unique’ three-year campaign centred around this year’s theme represents a vital shift in how health systems serve, focusing not just on treating diseases but on listening to the unique perspectives and experiences of individuals, families, and communities.

“At its core, this campaign places individuals, families, and communities at the heart of our health systems. Here in the Virgin Islands, this resonates deeply with our values of compassion, resilience, and community support,” Hon Wheatley’s statement continued.

His ministry, he added, is pleased to work with the BVI Cancer Society, whose work he called “exemplary”.

“I urge all residents to support their efforts, as they play a vital role in improving cancer care in our Territory,” Hon Wheatley said.

IT IS THE FOOD!!!!! Even the crack heads abd drunkards are living long but watch those who eat nonsense and sit in offices all day. They go work, church and home. Thwy dont drink or smoke but are sick before 50yrs old. This is no joke! It is ALL.IN THE FOOD and minimal physical activity. As simple as walking and drinking water is it goes a long way but many people dont partake.

If that is the case, why reduce the frequency of pap smears and mammograms covered for women under NHI? they are no longer covered annually but every three years. Prevention is better than cure. Why not spend minimal dollars to catch something earlier than hundreds of thousands to treat it? Makes no sense.

Interestingly, the conversation is about eradicating cervical cancer, while breast colon and prostate cancer are the most prevalent cancers in the VI. Let’s address those cancers as a matter of urgency Hon. Minister.
