‘Break free from the confines of your classroom's four walls’- Acting CEO to teachers
According to Acting Chief Education Officer Orlandette R. Crabbe, the world is evolving rapidly and students deserve an education that prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Mrs Crabbe said incorporating innovative teaching techniques not only keeps students excited about learning but also helps them develop critical skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability.
“Consider adding project-based learning, integrating technology, and fostering collaborative learning in your classrooms. As you prepare for the school year ahead, embrace change and be open to adapting your approach to meet the evolving needs of your students,” the Acting CEO told educators at the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Professional Development Day at Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on Monday, August 28, 2023.
The Professional Development Day was held under the theme: 'Moving Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead’.
‘Think outside the box’
Educators were encouraged to infuse their teaching with the power of outside resources to create engaging and impactful learning and to also venture outside the four walls of the classrooms!
“As a new school year begins, I urge you to break free from the confines of your classroom's four walls and embrace the transformative potential of experiential learning. By venturing beyond traditional boundaries, you can create lasting impact and significantly enhance student engagement. Real-world experiences provide invaluable context, foster deeper connections to learning, and equip your students with essential skills for the future,” Mrs Crabbe stated.
Additionally, teachers were told to think “outside the box” and embrace the exciting journey of reimagining education.
“It's time to break free from conventional boundaries and explore innovative ways to inspire, engage, and empower the next generation. Let us embrace the development of skills and competencies versus the over-emphasis on content,” Mrs Crabbe said.

some of them will need a miracle in order to think outside the box. These are educators now who don't even
believe in physical education, just giving students an essay writing or other nonsense that don't involve physically
moving their hands or foot. Take a page from some private schools who actually take their students to the beaches
for water sports activities or sage mountain trail. Now imagine you guys here in the Virgin Islands are surrounded by water and am pretty sure less than fifty percent of your students can swim. Thinking outside the box, you can start with swimming lesions and educational field trips to historical sites. When was the last time you took your students on a field trips????? but am sure you have time to feed them lies and rubbish about Christopher Columbus.
Whether the teachers actually try to do this or not is a different story, but at least we finally have a CEO that's not a pushover and is not going to keep making excuses for bad teachers. And lastly I think we should give her a real chance to turn things around before we dump on her but I know how we BVI people like to wallow in negativity so I don't expect any better. She was a very capable principal at JSPS and has been a very good educator her entire career so I think she definitely has the ability to right this ship, whether she does or not we have to wait and see.
Advantageous people that don’t like authority. Sad place /- this Tortola.
