BRANDYWINE BAY, Tortola, VI– In an effort to enhance the visitor experience, as well as to tackle overcrowding of tourist spots in the Virgin Islands, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said his government will be moving ahead with the development of Brandywine Bay.

During his State of the Territory Address at Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Premier Wheatley stated that the Virgin Islands is experiencing one of the strongest periods of tourism performance in its history.

He said that over the last three years, visitor arrivals have steadily climbed, from approximately 994,896 visitors in 2023, to more than 1,092,139 visitors in 2024, to a record-breaking 1,202,008 visitors in 2025, the highest tourism arrivals ever recorded in the history of the Virgin Islands.

But, according to Hon Wheatley, growing tourism numbers can also present an issue of "overcrowding".

“We understand very well, however, how overcrowding can negatively impact the visitor experience, and that is why we are laser focused on developing additional attractions for wider distribution of visitors. That is why I am pleased to announce that Brandywine Bay, which has been promised for many years, will break ground this year.”

Premier Wheatley also said there are a number of other attractions that will serve cruise passengers in particular, "which are under consideration and will be shared with the public".

'It’s time to move this project forward'- Premier

While addressing residents at a district meeting in February 2026, Premier Wheatley described Brandywine Bay as a hidden gem that has been overlooked for many years, stating, “It’s time to move this project forward.”

At that same meeting, Permanent Secretary Ronald F. Smith-Berkeley provided details about the proposal, noting that some of the land initially believed to be government-owned was not, and boundary clarifications were ongoing.

Smith-Berkeley stated that the first phase of development for Brandywine Bay would include refurbishing existing facilities, constructing a restaurant, and installing kiosks along the length of the beach.

He added that Brandywine Bay is not primarily suited for swimming due to the presence of seagrass, which does help with sand retention; however, kayaking and other water sports, such as snorkelling, would be excellent activities for this area.

Why is there an electrical cord crossing the road to get to the beach? Am I the only one who notices this? This can't be legal, and it is dangerous if someone's car wheel catches it. I would not have believed this would be allowed. Where is our District Representative to see this dangerous and illegal situation?

All this focus on cruise ship tourism is a waste of time and cheapens the whole tourism product. At the same the the hoards of cruise guests stress our already weak infrstructure like roads, water, and sewage. To top it off they dont spend and moeny and just trash up the place. But you dont get this do you? You see that head tax and suddenly its dollar signs in your eyes. You see another govt contract you can hand out to friends to help with re-election. You want to extend the runway so we can have even cheaper flights instead of trying to attract visitors who arent so cheap. Guests who might actually spend money and tip. Always so short sighted and the goal seems to be to make this place just like St Thomas, a dump...

So we are going to continue to only push beaches as an attraction for tourists to the BVI, that's crazy to me

Something like a coral world type could be a good attraction for tourist and locals by side close to the restrooms area and government can ask locals to invest by selling shares like something similar to what bvi investment club did . Its time government offer investment development with locals.

Go get all kind of Animals and Byrd's and put a Zoo deep in rite down to the right, if you looking for tourist attraction..That will be nice...Guyana has one that is not properly cared for but it is doing very well.

this man just double talk, if youre pushing initiatives to faster onboard investors whether local or external then let investors develop these tourism products without government handouts, at most lease them the land at market rate according to the crown lands mgmt act.
