Boxer Julan O. Brown says VI school girls 'sold sex' for food
On the Thursday, May 7, 2020, episode of the 'Honestly Speaking' radio show with moderator Claude O. Skelton-Cline, the boxer open up about this journey of coming to the VI on a work permit with the hopes of travelling to the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) on a 'boat ride' for boxing training.
After finding out; however, that was not possible due to the USVI having a visa requirement, Brown said he stayed in Tortola working in the tourism industry and eventually founded a local boxing mentorship and training institute.
He disclosed it was in these years- around 2014- during that boxing programme that a number of local youths would confide in him their secrets, included young school girls who said they sold sex to men for nightly meals.
Prostitutuon for food
"One of the things that these young ladies told me...'coach you know we didn't eat any dinner tonight?'
"So I said, why?
"She said 'coach, let me tell you something... I don't want you to tell anybody, we have to actually sell our bodies for food.'
"A young lady said that to me," Brown told Skelton-Cline.
Vivid memories
According to the boxer and trainer, upon hearing the story it revived vivid memories of living in Jamaica, including an instance where a close relative was almost raped by his stepfather.
"I actually went to persons in Government and I say you know these children going through these situations, and they were like, 'they just bad children, is them, children, from XYZ country right?'" he said.
The boxer alleged that the unnamed government worker would further stigmatise the young girls for not being 'from here,' hence no help was provided.
Mistakenly arrested
Mr Brown also had a traumatic experience of his own in his homeland, Jamaica, back in April 2019 while on vacation.
He had been reported missing by family members and police, a story first reported by our newsroom; however, it was later discovered that Mr Brown was mistakenly arrested by the Jamaica Constabulary in their pursuit of a robber.
