BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Well known Jamaican boxer and trainer, Mr Julan O. Brown aka ‘Iron Fist’ says school-aged girls in the Virgin Islands (VI) have confided in him certain secrets, including that they sold sex for food to get by.

On the Thursday, May 7, 2020, episode of the 'Honestly Speaking' radio show with moderator Claude O. Skelton-Cline, the boxer open up about this journey of coming to the VI on a work permit with the hopes of travelling to the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) on a 'boat ride' for boxing training.

After finding out; however, that was not possible due to the USVI having a visa requirement, Brown said he stayed in Tortola working in the tourism industry and eventually founded a local boxing mentorship and training institute.

He disclosed it was in these years- around 2014- during that boxing programme that a number of local youths would confide in him their secrets, included young school girls who said they sold sex to men for nightly meals.

Prostitutuon for food

"One of the things that these young ladies told me...'coach you know we didn't eat any dinner tonight?'

"So I said, why?

"She said 'coach, let me tell you something... I don't want you to tell anybody, we have to actually sell our bodies for food.'

"A young lady said that to me," Brown told Skelton-Cline.

Vivid memories

According to the boxer and trainer, upon hearing the story it revived vivid memories of living in Jamaica, including an instance where a close relative was almost raped by his stepfather.

"I actually went to persons in Government and I say you know these children going through these situations, and they were like, 'they just bad children, is them, children, from XYZ country right?'" he said.

The boxer alleged that the unnamed government worker would further stigmatise the young girls for not being 'from here,' hence no help was provided.

Mistakenly arrested

Mr Brown also had a traumatic experience of his own in his homeland, Jamaica, back in April 2019 while on vacation.

He had been reported missing by family members and police, a story first reported by our newsroom; however, it was later discovered that Mr Brown was mistakenly arrested by the Jamaica Constabulary in their pursuit of a robber.

Ridiculous. How about working for food? That's what decent people do. These girls selling their bodies is a CHOICE.

I had a BVI High School belonger student tell me the same thing. Not long after she was pregnant at 14 years old. And the father a 21 year old did not go to jail. Sickening and time for the BVI to face the shameful facts. The mother knew, and the child just thought it was normal. BVI needs to empower teenage girls and create pride in remaining a virgin till marriage.

Funny thing you mentioned that. I did a Course recently on Human Behavior. It was revealed that most times, a person evaluates another person based on his/her own values, culture, ethics, etc. Persons with no sense of self-worthiness are likely to judge others in the same vein since in a very sick way it makes them feel better about themselves. In other words, if you let's say call another person "a lil whore" with no evidential basic you are just expressing how you feel about your self. I can almost smell the evil pungent fragrance emanating from your words. You are one sick human being!

That is a lie! go check and see how many BV Islanders were given the jobs at the prison and walked away without any reason after a few days! Some Politicians could tell you how many times they bend over backward to find jobs for BVIslander youths and they just work for a few days and just quit like that. If some of you people were walking in a desert carrying a whole tank of water and you met a bucket containing one pint of the same liquid, you all would have stopped put a hole in the bucket and continue on your way with your tank full just because you don't want anyone else to get it to drink. By the way, BVIslanders children going to bed hungry? wow, that is a first! If someone else had mentioned that on this site "Island people" would have been blown away in these blogs regardless of wrote it. Stop looking for trouble!

It is important that these accusations that is being thrown out be investigated. If what this man says is true then it should be dealt with. Also the death threats to the woman in the other news report. This society is too small for us to sit back and allow these things to take place. Social Developement, Police or whichever Dept. Is responsible please investigate. It is not fair on the person's who have to live with or tolerate these kind of behavior neither is it fair on a country to be perceived in this manner.

He actually said it was ONE girl trusting him to keep a secret. So he's not only an attention whore but can't even be trusted. And who's to say any of it is even true? Evidence? Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
