ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A change of formation and a more determined approach may have led to a 4-0 defeat to the SuriBoys, but the BVI will go into tonight’s final match against Montserrat full of confidence.

Playing 3-5-2 with Jhon Samuel pushed up front to support Trevor Peters allowed the BVI to press Suriname for much of the match and certainly produced more attacking play even though the BVI were still unable to unlock a resilient Suriname defense.

Peters’ reward for hard work and some shots on goal was a pulled groin muscle which will see him miss out on the final group 3 match against Montserrat. Samuel had a shot from just inside the Suriname half well saved by their keeper and will probably be partnered up front by Carlos Septus tonight.

Troy Cesar who also had a solid performance in defense will push up to left wing as the BVI look to stamp some ascendancy on their lower ranked opponents to at least salvage some pride from the Caribbean Cup adventure and more importantly score some goals.

Suriname clinched qualification to the second round with the win at the Stade Municipal En Camée.

Goals in the 35th and 42nd by Stefano Rijssel sandwiched a 36th minute Giovanni Drenthe effort. It was Rijssel's second brace in two games.

Donovan Loswijk closed the Surinamese goal account nine minutes from time.

With maximum points from its opening two first-round games, Suriname will advance to the competition's next phase with a game to spare. The BVI have been eliminated from contention.

In Saturday’s other game Martinique overcame Montserrat 5-0 On the strength of four goals from the in-form Kevin Parsemain, Martinique also sealed qualification to the second round.

Parsemain, 24, scored six goals in Martinique's 16-0 win over the British Virgin Islands on Wednesday.

Steeve Gustan chipped in with a 9th minute tally, four minutes after Parsemain gave the host a 1-0 lead.

Martinique, which got additional goals from Parsemain in the 20th, 59th and 61st minutes, has six points from two games and will meet Suriname on Sunday for the group title.

The winners and runners-up from Groups 1-3 as well as the best runner-up from Group 4 or Group 5 will advance to a second, three-group round in late October.

I checked online to find out what happened tot he U17 team that went away a couple of months ago as there was no report locally about it, and now i understand why. They let in 54 goals in 3 matches and didnt score a single goal. At least the females only let in 48 goals in 3 matches even though they also didnt score.

    Something is very wrong here!

lets be positive and encourage the youngsters. The U17 team had 1 player that played a qualifying match before. The team is still developing and with the experience they gained they will utilize this next time around. The program in the BVI is very young and has to grow. As with a baby they must learn to crawl before they can walk. Along the way we should encourage them and not pull them down.
