Russia's airline industry has been hit with another major blow as the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) has announced it has suspended all Certificates of Airworthiness of those planes registered on the island.

"International sanctions on the aviation sector have had a significant impact on the ability to sustain safety oversight on Russian operated aircraft on the Bermuda Aircraft Registry. The airworthiness system has been restricted to the point that the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) is unable to confidently approve these aircraft as being airworthy," the island's aviation regulator said on Saturday.

Earlier this month, Bermuda's Premier David Burt confirmed that at least 740 of the approximately 900 aircraft registered in Bermuda operate in Russia.

Russian registered aircraft and airline companies were banned from entering the United States and the European Union airspace following the country's invasion of Ukraine

Airline manufacturers are also prohibited from selling most avionics and aircraft components to Russia

Great Britain has imposed sanctions on Russia and several oligarchs who are close allies of President Vladimir Putin.

Those restrictions must be enforced by British Overseas Territories such as Bermuda.
