BEEF ISLAND, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) has inspected the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, commonly known as the Beef Island Bridge, alongside engineers from the Public Works Department and Systems Engineering.

Following the inspection, the engineering teams reported that the 30-year-old bridge remains in good overall condition. They recommended that minor remedial works be carried out and that annual inspections continue to preserve the structure and support its safe operation.

Recommendations

Minister Rymer thanked the Public Works Department and Systems Engineering teams for their assessment and emphasised the importance of proactive maintenance across the Territory’s public infrastructure.

He added that regular inspections and timely maintenance are essential to protecting public infrastructure.

The inspection comes amid public concern about the condition of the bridge, which connects Tortola to Beef Island and serves as a key link to the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport. Engineers said the recommended works are minor and intended to maintain the bridge’s condition rather than address any immediate structural failure.

Officials said continued monitoring will help ensure that any deterioration is identified early and addressed before it becomes more costly or disruptive.

The public deserves to see the official engineering report, not just verbal assurances from an onsite visit. Were assessments conducted to determine the cross-sectional loss of the corroded reinforcement, the extent of hidden corrosion, the concrete’s strength and integrity, and the bridge’s load-bearing capacity and factors of safety?

It is highly questionable that all the necessary testing and structural calculations could have been completed within two days. On what technical basis was it concluded that only minor remedial works are required?

Public safety demands documented engineering evidence, not assumptions.

What minor repairs? That concrete is rotten from the bottom up. There is a weakness somewhere that cannot hold up the weight of the pillar or the part of the bridge that is broken. There is no minor repair for a bridge!

So the Works department' engineers can qualify the bridges, as safe and sound, but these same engineers can't qualify the asphalt to create the kinds of roads necessary for usage in the territory..

    Ooohhh, kkayy

Are these people licensed PE or chartered civil engineers? They call them engineers, but what is their background? This is too important for anything less than top level professionals.

Bridge condition is grouped generally into three tatings, ie, a) good, b) fair and c) poor. A good condition rating generally consist of no, or minor deterioration. A good material condition rating is a snapshot in time.Further, a condition rating is not the same as a load rating, ie, bridge safe load carrying capacity. Corrosion results in rebar rusting, expansion, concrete cracking, spalling and popouts., etc.Corrosion can occur within a pier/column without any external signs. Internal corrosion can be identified through generally non/destructive testing. Corrosion can interrupt load paths. Broken load paths prevent forces from transfer through decks, girders, abutments, pier, footings, foundation, etc. Any broken load path can weaken the structural integrity of the bridge , resulting in failure, collapse, etc.

Bridges should be on average at minimum every two years and more often as needed. Any maintenance or repairs should be performed urgently. A facility management idiom: “ Don’t expect what you don’t inspect .”
