BD Basketball league in high gear!
FLPS needed a win over Cedar School to clinch 4th place in Zone “B”, but despite the efforts of Jason Potter, went down 19-8. Potter scored 6 points with 2 blocks, 3 steals and 1 assist, but Cedar’s overall team play saw them home. Juden Chalwell top scored with 5 points adding 9 steals. Jude Kinkead scored 4 points with 4 rebounds and Kia Turnbull scored 3 with 2 steals and 2 assists.
Donald Layne and Dante Mitcham both recorded four steals for FLPS who ended with a 2-3 record and missed out on the play offs.Cedar School, although already qualified for the next round, lost an epic encounter with Joyce Samuel Primary School (JSPS) 24-22 to decide the Zone Champions and top seeding.
JSPS were ahead by just 2 going into the final 2 minutes and all square at 20 each with just over a minute to go.An interception deep inside their own half gave JSPS the chance to quickly transition to offense from what had been a few nervous moments of defense. A long pass found Rafique Manning who drove into the paint and made no mistake with a 2-pointer.
Fifty eight seconds to go and JSPS were up by 2. A time out by Cedar allowed them to regroup and immediately Juden Chalwell drew a foul as he attempted a shot. Both free throws were missed, but Cedar still piled forward using full court pressure as they looked for the equalizer.
Kai Turnbull eventually netted a 2-pointer to send the many parents of Cedar School who were nervously watching into shouts of joy and it looked like the game would go to overtime. Then with just 3 seconds left, Manning picked up a defensive rebound, quickly fed the ball to Shauliqua Fahie on the right, she took the ball forward, drew the defense, evaded a tackle and fired off a 3 point attempt. The ball bounced off the rim and Malicki Thomas leaped high to claim the rebound. He made some room and coolly fired home from the edge of the paint, despite Kai Caldwell’s desperate attempt at a block, to secure the victory and send the Belle Vue fans wild.
Manning finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds, Thomas also scored 8 and K’Cei Moses had 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 5 steals and 3 assists. For Cedar Kinkead had 6 points, 3 rebounds, Juden Chalwell 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Kai Turnbull added 3 rebounds and 2 assists to his 5 points.
In Zone “A”, ASPS finished with an unbeaten 4 – 0 record to clinch top spot following up a 30 – 6 win over Enis Adams Primary School (EAPS) with a 31 – 10 victory against Ivan Dawson Primary School (IDPS).The loss by EAPS meant they were knocked out of the play offs, finishing the season without a win.
Kedrick Matthew led the victory charge for ASPS with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Dante Vanterpool notched 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals and Malik Jones scored 7 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. For EAPS, Keandre Canino scored 4 points.
Against IDPS, Jones scored 12 points with 5 rebounds, Vanterpool 9 points and Matthew, again scored 8 adding 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Darrion Parsons scored 5 for IDPS.
The play off which will take place during the coming week will feature JSPS v AMPS, Cedar v WWPS in Zone “B”. In Zone “A”, ASPS take on IDPS and LDPS face St Georges.
The winners of each Zone match will then play each other in semi final action before the Championship game on Saturday November 12.
