Bayside Blazers lost by 1 point amid protest
Bayside Blazers claims referee violated rules
However, officials from the Bayside Blazers Basketball Club have cried foul and have launched an official protest with the League Committee.
In a dramatic move at last night’s game played at the Save the Seed Energy Centre Referee Neil J. Thomas told the Bayside Blazers Head Coach Rhennie O. Phipps who has been coaching the team from its founding last year to “go sit down...you were not coaching the team tonight” when the Coach approached the scorer’s table to make an inquiry.
In addition, the manager of the Team Julian Willock also approached the scorer’s table to make an inquiry as to why two points that Bayside Blazers earned were not added to the score clock, however, he was given a ‘technical’ by the same referee.
According to a spokeswoman for the Bayside Blazers Basketball Club Head Coach Rhennie O. Phipps has launched an official protest with the League. However, she declined to go into details as to what are the issues raised in the protest.
She pointed out that the rules governing the Hon. Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League of which she obtained online on page 10 Under General Game Time Rules, Sec VII, it states; Approaching the Score’s table; ‘Only the managers, coaches or captains of a team are allowed to communicate to the Scorer’s table during their game”.
“So both our Manager and Head Coach were well in their rights to ask a question,” she told the news site in an emailed statement.
In a telephone call to team Owner and Manager Mr. Willock, he told our news room that he had “no comment as I am very careful not to create the appearance of conflict of interest, as I am also the Chairman of the League Committee”.
He referred us to his team spokeswomen who asked us to email our questions, and we did and got a short statement in response to our questions.
The Game’s high drama
It was a most unlikely result to a game that had seen the Bayside Blazers pull back from a first half deficit of 13 points to be up by 10 with 3 minutes left and then be ahead by 8 points with 93 seconds to go on the clock.
However, in the last 60 seconds Mackensie Baltimore splashed home a “3” and even after Shaquille Fonseca had made a complete hash of what appeared an easy 2 pointer following an intercept from “CJ” Georges, the Game Boyz were thrown a lifeline.
Fonseca atoned for his early miss with a successful score after Jubal K. Jones had netted twice from the Free Throw line to make it 78-75 in favour of the Bayside Blazers and then, with 17 seconds remaining, Louie A. Poblete was fouled as the Boyz forced the time clock to stop.
As Poblete sank his first attempt, the scorers made an adjustment to the score to now show 78-77.
The Blazers bench broke out in pandemonium, with almost their entire coaching staff and Management approaching the Scorer’s table in outrage.
Once the melee had calmed down and after the Referees had awarded the Boyz a Technical Foul against what turned out to be the Blazers Manager, Mr. Willock, Poblete sank his second Free Throw to make it 80-77.
Baltimore went 1 for 2 from the Charity Stripe to make it 80-78 with 11 seconds left and then Benjamin drove into the paint, scored whilst being fouled and sank the “and one” to put his team up by one.
Into the dying seconds and the unfortunate Sandy E. Nadal saw his buzzer beater bounce off the back board and away.
Nadal had been the inspiration for the Blazers as they clawed their way back into the game during the 3rd quarter when he sank not one, but five “3”pointers and then was fouled going for a sixth.
Ironically for such a sharp shooter from distance, he missed all three visits to the Charity Stripe, but had done enough to make it just a five point game as the period ended.
In the 4th quarter, The Blazers went ahead, 56-53, after a Poblete “3”, Georges brought it back to 56-55, Jolyon J. D. Wilson then opened the lead to three before Georges slammed home to leave the difference just one.
Poblete then went 4 for 4 from the Free Throw line to open a five point gap with just over six minutes left. Poblete then went in from down town to make it a six point game with 5 minutes left and Nadal refocused his long range radar to make it 74-66 into the last 3 minutes.
Wilson then seemed to have delivered the coup de grace to put the Blazers up by 10, but just when the crowd thought it was all over and that the Blazers 100 per cent record was intact, the real fun and games began!
Benjamin top scored with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 6 steals, Baltimore finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds, Georges also 14 with 9 rebounds, Tyree Maduro 7 rebounds, Anthony Kahleel 6 and Jevaugn Parsons 5.
Nadal led the Bayside Blazers with 33 points, including 8 three pointers, Poblete 16 points, Wilson 9 with 5 rebounds and Shakeem E. Freeman 7 points.
Bayside Blazers' Assistant Coach is Jason A. Edwin.
