ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says the battle against the United Kingdom (UK) giving the governor additional powers is not one for himself or any individual member of the VI, rather it is a battle for all of the Virgin Islands (VI).

“It's not a battle for me, it’s not a battle for the members of this administration. This is a battle for the Virgin Islands. I don't think it's a good thing to be gleeful when this Virgin Islands is facing a difficult battle like this,” he said in response to questions from the media on whether the "battle against the UK" has been lost.

The Premier was at the time speaking at a January 8, 2024, press conference on an update on the Implementation of the COI Recommendations in the VI, and how the VI moves forward in terms of preserving democracy.

“I think all of us have to stand in solidarity, regardless of your challenges with any particular administration. You know that's what elections are for, that's what public meetings are for, that's what protests are for…all are part of democracy. Those are the tools we use not colonial tools like taking away democracy,” he said.

Gov't now awaiting OT Minister response

Meanwhile, with the Premier now awaiting a response from UK Minister for Overseas Territories (OT), Hon David H. Rutley for his support ‘to stay true to democracy’ against the Governor's plan for additional powers in the VI, he said he will not preempt the response of the UK Minister.

“I'm not going to determine what the response of the letter will be. We'll send the letter, we'll also engage our partners throughout the region to support us. We will engage the C24, we'll engage the other leaders of the Overseas Territories to support us and then of course, when we get the response from the minister, we'll discuss the next steps with my colleagues.”

Premier Wheatley said the plan is to press forward to success with a reminder that the VI will do whatever is necessary to preserve democracy in the territory.

People let us be very very careful. Dispute our political differences, or how we might feel about our elected officials there is a larger picture here. Our fundamental human right, modern partnerships, UN charter etc. Despite what all governments have done over the years, we built this VI for what it is today. We must pull together for it. Do no let divide and conquer tactics get the better of us.

If the UK really cared then there would be:
      1) More women as Governors and not just one or two lately since 2020. This says what they think about women.
      2) They should have had one black person as Governor in the 21st century. It shows their position on racism.
      3) At least one or more persons from the Caribbean as Governors. It shows they are not interested in developing the people of the Caribbean and have a ceiling for them on how far they should progres.
      4) At least have documented somewhere the procedures any OT must follow if they want independence. The process should be known to all. When the process is not known to all it shows their intentions are not pure nor transparent.

These simple things exposes the true agenda of the Brits. They need to stop taking the people of the Caribbean for a$#E$.

How the hell the Governor could keep the white UK Commissioner of Police on the job while a review of allegations of corruption of his actions is ongoing? How the hell the Governor could be doing a review rather than a full independent investigation? People the Governor is abusing his powers. This is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!

Give the territory a fighting chance. Hand over the premiership to Lorna. We will remember your selfless act for generations to come. Otherwise we will take it from you and remember you as the one who sank the ship. The ball is in your court slow man. Play it and do it well for the people. There is only one way to win. STEP DOWN. I am amazed how some of you are quick to negativiely evaluate and call down all our local leaders but praise people from the UK whom you know nothing about. However their history has always been one of divide and conquer. Let us face it, the UK is not taking care of their affairs in the UK, just check the news. What they are doing with BVI and all their Caribbean OTs is a slap in the face of democracy.

The BVI must fight. Imagine the Governor wants more power to allow him to ignore the democratic process to do the following (Note these are just a few of his alleged intentions cloaked as good governance):
      1) Take over Immigration: He wants to immediately give over 4000 of his kind status so they can out number the people of the BVI and then allow them to have a secondary take over plan.
      2) Pass the new police act on his own: He wants to give the police unlimited powers to do many anti-democratic things such as but not limited to searching anyone's home without a warrant and do so on mere suspicion. Talk about making the BVI a police state where people will have no basic human nor democratic rights.
      3) He wants to pass the Jury Act: Here is where he wants the cases to proceed without any jury to decided the cases but rather have the Judge themselves decide if you are guilty. Not only is this anti democratic but it represents dictatorship as all the UK will do next is flood the position of Judges with persons from the UK who have like minds as them against the locals and Caribbean people. It is another tier of their take over plan.
      4) Powers to pass laws by himself without HOA: Here is where he wants to legalize same sex marriage. Here is where he wants to redefine who is a Virgin Islander.

I will stop there for now but people of the BVI these people have no good intention for us. They have no respect for our democracy and democratic rights. It is time to wake up and stand up for what is right and represents true democracy and not sit back and allow a wicked agenda by the Brits to get through.

The BVI has a democratic system and if any one wants to run the BVI then let them seek to get the people's support through the established democratic process which is through the polls on election day. No one knows the agenda nor history of any Governor as they are appointed by the UK and not selected by the people of the BVI. So like most people in the BVI on the ground, I share in the strong views that no Governor should have such unlimited powers without going through the democratic system.

Speak for yourself because the majority of people of the BVI are not in favor of what the UK & Governor is doing as it is highhanded and evil. The majority of people in the BVI are also disgruntled how the Governor is mishandling the matter with the UK Commissioner of Police. These things are wrong and they need to be called out for them.

If you and your spouse have a problem will you allow someone else to take them over for 2 years or any amount of time and then give them back to you? Of course not! You may never get them back and they may be in a worse position thinking they were going into better. So the same principle applies for those who are saying let the UK take over for a while. We say NO!!! The grass always seem greener on the other side but the water bill may cost more to maintain. We built the BVI and brought it to where it is so we can take it to the next level with unity and in unity.

While we all want those things please show me which country has all of them because it certainly isn't the UK. The BVI has plenty improvements to make but they have done well and will continue to improve. Serious crime is at an all time high in the UK and so is corruption, drugs, murders, and cost of living. They are failing the UK residents so the BVI should expect no different from them. We will stick with our own.

Most of us are with the Premier and we are ready to march now. If that Commissioner of Police is not put on leave immediately then we must fight for what is right.

The Brits trying to programme our minds that all our BVI people and leaders did is mess but the majority of people in the Virgin Islands knows better. Look what has been done and is being done by this little country without the UK help over the years:
      1) Modern Hospital and facility
      2) Accredited Healthcare system
      3) Built a college HLSCC and put a branch on Tortola and Virgin Gorda
      4) Made HLSCC free to all residents
      5) Free primary to tertiary education for all in BVI.
      6) Modern facilities at ESHS & BFEC high schools
      7) Many major repairs to Government buildings on all islands since Irma and Maria
      8) Direct flights from the USA to BVI
      9) Balanced budget every year without deficits
      10) Ontime budgets every year
      11) A+ rating from credible financial institutions on the handling of our finances.
      12) Thousands of scholarships abroad over the years for BVI residents to study abroad and get their Associates, Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate, certifications, etc
      13) A good technical secondary school
      14) Free Bus Shuttle service through the town area in Tortola
      15) A healthy and well regulated financial services industry
      16) More degress per capita per person than most countries
      17) Many professional athletes and others to come
      18) BVI produced Judges, Chief Justice, lawyers, doctors, captains, and so many more important professionals
      19) Stellar marine & culinary programme at HLSCC to qualify our people in many marine areas such as captains, chefs, etc.
      20) Strong Shipping Registry industry
      21) Handled COVID better than most countries and saved a lot of lives and livelihood without the UK help.

I will stop there for now as the BVI and their leaders strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. The BVI took the mess and turn it into a good message as the UK only had the BVI to be a messy bird sanctuary. So you back up with you nonsense because the true BVI people know who they are and not who the Brits trying to portray us as for their own wicked agenda.

If the Governor who is over the public service sees there are issues with achieving the deadlines especially due to the lack of human resources and the Governor was acting in good faith then he would have worked in unity to use his powers to second public officers to the areas that needed more human resource and train them so they can help to meet the deadlines. The issue is the Governor does not care about meeting the unattainable and unreasonable deadline. He is only interesting in achieving what was always their end game --- an unjustifiable take over. We must fight for our human and democratic rights.

What is your point? Nothing wrong with mixed races going with each other or having children or get married. The issue is when one race hold them self superior over other races and have those races as inferior is where the problem lies. The UK white officials see themselves & think of themselves as superior over the Caribbean black people and leaders. This is the issue which causes war.

I’m not totally averse to and understands Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley, D-7, Leader of government business, and MoF posit and point on the current power grab crisis by Governor John Rankin, CMG, not being a battle for him but for the Virgin Islands. Well, as the leader of the Virgin Islands, in my opinion, it his battle to lead and motivate Virgin Islanders in the fight against the brazen power grab..

Moreover, leadership is more about behavior than skill. As such, words in action speaks far greater than words in print. Effective leadership requires much unselfishness and sacrifices for the greater good. Consequently, the Premier cannot and should not wait for the Minister of Overseas Territories, Hon David Hutley, to respond to his letter; he must take urgent proactive action.

Good leaders demonstrate exemplary vision, set the tone, lead by personal example, exhibit the right style, coach the team, and demonstrate the ability to handle adversity, which is a certainty for public officials. The Premier must take the lead , motivate the troops, marshall the resources, plan, organize, and march, lead from the front up the hill. Strike like rattler,,strike, strike, and strike again.
