ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald E. Georges is reminding the public to remain vigilant as new COVID-19 variants continue to emerge.

He also noted that at least two Omicron variants are present in the territory.

“As of July 8, there are 24 reported active cases of COVID-19 in the Territory, Dr Georges said. He added, “After genetic testing, BA.2 and BA.4 Omicron variants have been found to be circulating within the Virgin Islands community while the BA 2.75 variant identified in India has not been identified in the Virgin Islands.”

Dr Georges, in a Government Information Services (GIS) press release on July 13, 2022, explained that the World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies B.1.1.529 as a variant of concern while BA.4, BA.5, and various sub-lineages of BA.2 remain under monitoring by the World Health Organisation at this time.

He said BA.4 and BA.5 are expected to replace existing variants in Europe and North America in the coming weeks to months.

New variants resistant to 'vaccines & natural immunity'

According to the Acting Chief Medical Officer, the main concern with new variants in particular BA.4 and BA.5 is their ability to escape both natural and vaccine-derived immunity and lead to high numbers of infections.

“The public is therefore urged to take appropriate precautions to prevent infection where necessary. This may include the wearing of facemasks, frequent hand hygiene, and general sanitation,” Dr Georges cautioned.

The Ministry of Health is advising persons who are ill or suspect that they may have COVID-19 or have been exposed to the disease to be tested to confirm their status.

Persons who are positive for COVID-19 should self-isolate for a period of 7 days and end isolation if they test negative by rapid test or after 10 days with no test.

Just keep yourselves safe doing what you have been doing all of this time. Nothing has changed. Mask up social distancing.

Everyone needs to think about this. As of tomorrow testing to enter thr BVI is not required. Visitors can bring us all kinds of diseases. Now we are being told there is a new varient here. Something doesn't add up. Do not let your guard down too quickly. Still protect yourselves for your own sake.

    I thought CDC clearly said
First 3 days before symptoms then last 2 days of symptoms that one is considered contagious hence the reason of the 5 days quarantine.

And I also thought that COVID is being treated as a common flu?

Didn’t they say if u positive wear your mask and they contacts are free to go about their business .....

Yes!with all that we have around us now and we still here trying to push for a Festival jump up jou've't. What is our priority here, don't we learn?
We can do better than we are doing. That same festival budget could be used for better purposes .ere, if we take our brains from where we are sitting on it.

Do you know that we have tourist entering out ports of entry without wearing of face masks putting our officers at risk to obtain these variants spread it across our territory? I suggest that we impose a mask mandate on all these entering tourist so our BVI people can be safe.

When will people see the truth. Some places are forcing the fifth shot. Other places are making it mandatory for a shot every 9 months that means in ten years you would have 10 shots wow first in history and people still don't understand what's going on. Go do research on this Vaccine if not read revelation 13, Daniel 24,and many more verses but ask the Almighty Creator for guidance and he will direct you. It's has an evil entity running this Earth and you need to wake up before you end up on the wide road to destruction

Virus and vaccine have proven to be a profitable venture for the billionaires. With this intent they will continue to create viruses, but they under estimate the people, we are onto them.. They will fail..

Where is the data for the BVI Vaccinated deaths. Bring us some real updates because all around the world the sudden death rates has skyrocketed and its not covid. Most were found to be vaccine related (side effects). Words from one of the top life insurance company. These variants, wars and inflation are the distraction from the real truth.
