ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Daughter of the Virgin Islands soil, Astra Davies Penn is the newest addition to the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (JLSC).

Davies Penn was recently sworn into the JLSC by Governor Daniel Pruce.

The newest JLSC member is a graduate of Pine Manor College, Boston (Liberal Arts Degree), University of the West Indies (Bachelor of Laws, 1994), and University of the West Indies (Bachelor of Laws, 1994). She also holds a Legal Education Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School.

Davies Penn was admitted to the Bar in the Virgin Islands in 1996.

JLSC

The Judicial and Legal Services Commission is governed by Sections 94 and 95 of the Virgin Islands Consultation Order, 2007.

One of the key responsibilities of the JLSC, as per the constitution, is to make recommendations to Governor on appointments, removals or the discipline of persons holding the offices of AG, DPP, Magistrate and any office in the public service of the AG's Chambers, or any Registrar or other officer of the High Court who is required to possess legal qualifications; and to such offices in the public service, for appointment to which persons are required to possess legal qualifications.

      We don’t need to change the AG but we need to get rid of the DPP immediately.
      We need a DPP with a good knowledge of the law, good judgment, and even temperament, a pleasant demeanour, and a lack of self importance - in other words we need exactly the opposite of what we have.
