BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - On the heels of the George P. Floyd Jr killing, which sparked widespread civil unrest in the United States and around the world, Honestly Speaking moderator and social commentator, Claude O. Skelton-Cline said the remnants of institutional racism and colonial powers against people of colour are still present in the Virgin Islands (VI), starting with the Governor's Office.

"The fact that we have a Governor that is appointed here, that office is the symbol of the ever-present residue of colonialism, and racism, institutional. Ask yourself why we never had a black governor here," Skelton-Cline told his listening audience on the Thursday, June 9, 2020, edition of the show on ZBVI 780 AM.

Governor should come from British OTs - Premier Fahie

Skelton-Cline's comments echo similar comments made by Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), who recently said the time has come for the United Kingdom (UK) to allow persons from the Overseas Territories to be governors.

“Choose about two or three or five persons from the OT’s and put them in the UK and train them how to become governors and let them become governors in different OT’s but not the one they are from."

This he said is not the Territory of the VI taking a stance against the UK but rather the VI looking at things in a mature manner, “And that is not being disrespectful,” he said.

Crown still watching VI

Skelton-Cline; however, charged that the Office of the Governor and the appointment of the crown is a symbol of institutional racism by itself. "Ask yourself how it is, that over 200 years away from emancipation that we are still being watched over by a Crown."

He also called the public holiday in recognition of the Sovereign’s Birthday a residue of colonial power in the face of dire economic times in the VI and an ill-opportune time to close businesses looking to bounce back from COVID-19.

African American George P. Floyd Jr, 46, was killed on May 25, 2020, as a white Minneapolis officer pressed a knee on Floyd’s neck, sparking racial injustice movements around the world.

I disagree with Mr. Cline. If they are functioning as agents for the Queen I prefer that they represents her in looks and ethnicity. It's disheartening to have someone that looks like you or with whom you are familiar enforcing the Queens' edicts especially when you disagree with it. It doesn't matter whether a governor or any agent for the Queen is local or not, they must support the queens interest. Period!

Why this man of the cloth don't try and do what God has him on this world for. To win soul. So many people are depressed, don't know where to turn. let us here the uncompromising word of God. After all these pains and trials, we have something to look forward to. 'Heaven". Tell us to start cleaning our homes, get rid of all the malice and forgive each other. Let us show love to each other whether we are white or black because our God make us. Without love we cannot go to heaven. Mr. Skelton-Cline if God should come now and ask you how many souls you win for him . What will be your answer? It time to leave all these earthly things , get up off your knees and take the word to our dying souls. God is coming soon and let us prepare ourselves for eternal life. Our youths are looking for someone to tell them about there is a better way and not fixing there breast and butt for them to look good for others to see and we don't really care how they look.
The BVI is a bless place. We had two warnings: The flood (he stop it just in times before many will be lost in Road Town) and Hurricane Irma (It came in the day when we could have run and get rescue), the third one will be sorry. Please let us get ready BVI.

Please post my comments. Thank you.

First of all it’s God with a capital G. You don’t spell your name with a common letter now do you.

Second of all why so focused on what others portray Jesus as ...that’s where you went wrong from the onset.

Focus on building your relationship with Christ. You think you make yourself.

I’m convinced people are more ignorant everyday and the Bible speaks of it.

Psalm 14 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

The only thing racist here is the guy saying all this.
The governor represents the queen, he is not here to represent the OT, that is the governments job.
The BVI would be 3rd world overnight if independence is decided.
This guy is one of the main reasons, he would help strip this place of any and all wealth within a week of independence.

No eyes, I am not against independence at all, it is inevitable.
But BVI is simply not ready now, it needs a PLAN.
The current one is to get to the money, without the current watching eye of the governor.
We need better, much better vision to move forward.
and if you think the current mentality of “grab it all now” is a good one, then we are indeed in terrible shape.

Why do you want a black BOTC to be the Governor of a British Overseas Territory, when its the Queen of Great Britiain who appoints the Governor. As long as the BVI is UKBVI,there will be a whitemen Governor born in the UK.
NDP members turned against NDP because the new leader Myron Walwyn was born from Expatriates parents in the BVI,and based on the fact that he was born as expat,NDP members rejected him on that basis, but you want the UK to appoint a non UK to the Governor of the BVI?
Tolians, stop this one-sided racism. The BVI is small enough for all to see,how you all dislike white people being the boss, and you couldn't accept Myron being the boss of NDP,but you know what,as usual---
Blame the Governor for the NDP breaking up because Myron is boss,Blame the governor for that too..

Mr. Cline, Your suggestion is to choose two, three, or five persons from the OTs. Send them to the UK. Train them how to become Governors in the different OTs but not in the one they are from" Here are some leaks in that. If racism is Instutionalised wouldn't these persons be trained by the same colonial Powers with the same ideology? Secondly, Do you think that B.V.Islanders would accept another person regardless of their skin color to be Governor here? Thirdly Suppose that one or more of these persons is white ( consider the fact that there are such persons who are natives of certain OTS who would be qualified for that post) would that person be disqualified based on the fact that he/she happens to be white? Suppose the UK sends a black person to be Governor, would that solve the issue? The solution then based on your concept is to remove the system of Governorship which according "which is a symbol of Institutional racism" (not the person) and replaced it with something else and that may involve going independence.

Now look at the diversity in the BVI - where are the representatives of the minority ethnicities in the government here?

I'm constantly amazed at the things people say with very little challenge. Someone needs to remind Mr. Skelton-Cline that one cannot eat one's cake and have it too. Either the BVI is a territory belonging to and ruled by Britain and is therefore subject to playing by Britain's rules, or it is an independent nation that makes its own rules (and that is not 100% possible given the world in which we live). I find myself wondering if he truly believes all that he says or if he's just out to stir the pot. Given the fact that he is supposed to be both intelligent and educated, in spite of my usually trusting nature, I find myself leaning toward the latter.

The VI is a partially local self-governing territory with government sharing governing responsibilities with the crown. The crown represents the UK and is the de facto head of state. Take a close look at the Queen so who do you think she would want to represent her? It is not a coincidence that the VI has not had a Black governor as yet. It is uncomfortably for the UK. Looks like Megan Markle didn’t have an easy go at it, stepping away from royal duties.

i personally feel a black governor will be a pain in the butt because he or she will set about having to impress the white rulers that sent him to the territory: very often black people have the tendency to suppress each other: right in my vi some are very aggressive towards people from the west indies however some of us very very quick to kiss the european's backside...prove me wrong !!!!

Why is there never a black Gocernor? There are eminently qualified people in the OTS to hande that post' Look at the UK. What is there to speak of as an example of good governance. The UK itself is becoming ''third world.'' the economy is in the tank. They screwed up the pandemic response. And as for corruption: who is more corrupt than the British? I tell you why you have not had a black governor. Because the OTs are the last bastion of racist colonialization. So a white governor remains a symbol of the old colonial regime which whites in the OTs love to see. But citizens of Ots have been brainwashed into believing the white governor would be better than a black governor. It is all part of the slavery and colonial mentality we all lossess here in the OTs. I don't agrre with Cline on a lot of matters. But he is 100% correct on this matter. The UK is in no way better than us. It is finished as a country. But we are all blind and believe the white man's way is better than our own. That is why we tolerate so much crap from these people in the BVI. Cline you are 100% correct. If they are so democratic appoint a black governor for a change. They can't. Why? the racist system will not allow it. The racists here will not feel comfortable invited to tea by a black governor. It is that simple. They forget colonization is dead and gone and it ain't coming back.

The UK, Spain, France, Denmark, Portugal, Belgium and other European colonialists exploited the colonies; the UK was the leader of the pack. It confiscated the resources of the colonies and coupled it with Slave labour to build its world class economic system. Though Slave labour built the UK economy, improved residents quality of life and standard of living, and passed on intergeneration wealth, Slaves/Blacks were not seen as equal. Blacks were viewed as mentally inferior and seen as and used as hewers of wood and carriers of waters. Embarrassed, there some token and appeasement opportunities provided and some tolerance shown but no equality. Racial discrimination and prejudice is still prevalent. So is it a coincidence that there has not yet been a Black governor in the VI?
    • @Diaspora (11/06/2020, 10:43) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
Despite it's well known history and involvement in the slave trade, the UK is now a much less racist place than anywhere in the Caribbean. You can succeed in the UK regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation. Can you say the same about any country here. The fact is there is fighting between blacks and Indians and Asians, locals and "Island People", hatred of gays and sexism is rife. Where is the local focus on those issues?

The sordid history of colonialism is wreaked with much evil and unspeakable and untold atrocities. Colonialism and its twin Slavery has committed the greatest sin and greatest tragedy against humanity, ie, Blacks. This twin evil created a deep racial, social, cultural and economic divide among Blacks and Whites.

Whites promoted themselves as superior to Blacks mentally, physically, intellectually and in all other means. That air of superiority still exist among too many Whites, especially among many in high powerful and influential positions. Anything bad or negative was tagged with a negative connotation, ie, being Blackballed. Blacks were enslaved, abused and dehumanized yet their free labour used to build the UK economy, causing it to flourish. This was the only value and worth Blacks had and is probably still the attitude. Though Blacks expended blood, sweat and tears to build the UK economy, everyone but Slaves and their descendants benefitted, ie, slave traders, slave owners, White businesses...... etc. To date, neither Slaves nor their descendants have gotten a wooden nickel of compensation. Much more to tell but more time. Is the reason why to date that there has not been a Black Governor (think the name change occurred in 1971; previously administrator) clearly obvious?
