PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Applications are now open for the James J. Harris Scholarship Programme for accounting studies at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

The scholarship programme was officially launched on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at the HLSCC Paraquita Bay campus.

The Rotary Club of Central Tortola created the scholarship in collaboration with the HLSCC and the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports in memory of the late Rotarian James J. Harris, an accountant, who passed away in 2023.

The President of the Rotary Club of Central Tortola, Mr Annill Daniel, said the impact of the late Rotarian, the inspiration of his service, and the spirit of his leadership, will continue to resonate for generations to come.

“As Rotarians, we believe in the power of service to transform lives and communities. The Rotary Club of Central Tortola has been committed to creating meaningful and sustainable change in the British Virgin Islands. Our investment in education and youth development goes beyond charitable efforts; it is about empowering individuals and strengthening communities for generations to come,” he said.

A stepping stone for young minds

The James Harris Scholarship he said is a stepping stone for young minds to reach their full potential and become catalysts for positive change.

“[The] scholarship [was] designed to provide opportunities to aspiring students to pursue an Associate of Arts Degree in Accounting. More than just financial assistance, this scholarship stands as a commitment to the youth of these Virgin Islands ensuring educational opportunities remain within reach for those who dream big and work hard,” Mr Daniel explained.

This, he said, is a fitting significant step by the Rotary Club as a tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the principles of hard work, service and integrity.

According to Mr Daniel, the James Harris Scholarship Programme is a testament to the power of service, and the responsibility Rotarians hold to leave the world better than they found it.

“James gave selflessly to his community, and today, we give back in his name. May this scholarship be a lasting beacon of hope, a symbol of opportunity and a tribute to a life well-lived,” he stated.

Scholarship is an incredible gesture- Dr Richard W. Georges

Meanwhile, President of the HLSCC Dr Richards W. Georges said the late James J. Harris' life, though short, was one well lived.

“I am pleased that we are able to honour his memory today by providing a path for somebody else to continue at least the mantle or vocation that James so dearly loved.

This is an incredible gesture; it’s going to transform lives [because] it’s not just for this year, it’s an ongoing annual commitment from the Rotary Club and the more that we can create pathways for students to realise their potential, the more we can meet them where they are and build them to what they can be the better off it is for all of us.

Mrs Dana Lewis Ambrose, Head of the Business and Computer Studies Department at the HLSCC, added that opportunities like this new scholarship are important for students as it gives them hope.

“Education in 2025 is not cheap…it is sometimes a challenge, and we are seeing that, so I have to congratulate the Rotary Club of Central Tortola…for making this happen because it’s essential,” Mrs Lewis-Ambrose said.

Currently, only one scholarship will be awarded every year. Forms must be accompanied by a personal character reference and a brief personal statement. Students must also be in possession of an HLSCC acceptance letter if not already enrolled or enrolled in the Associate's Degree in Accounting programme. Successful recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and a 95% attendance record.
