ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Assemblies of God Cornerstone School (AGCS) emerged victorious in the finals of the 2014 Inter-school Spelling Bee Contest last evening, March 4, 2014 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Led by Terisha Bascombe, Nicklous Kanhai and Kimberley Subramanie, AGCS finished with 21 points in first place, followed by Isabella Morris Primary with 20 points and Agape Total Life Academy with 19 points.

Competition winners received trophies while each of the participants received a copy of a dictionary.

Eleven schools participated in the finals of the competition which began with a total of nineteen schools from various parts of the Territory. Several Rotarians acted as contest officials.

Students appeared to struggle at various points with some of the words given by the contest officials while some gave good accounts of themselves before a relatively modest audience comprised mostly of teachers and family members.

Commenting on the apparent challenges experienced by the students, Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn declared afterwards that there was some work that needed to be done.

“We can also see from these competitions, the audience can see, the teachers can see, [those] who are here, the Principals, the areas which needed to be worked on. Particularly with the spelling bee competition, there are some concepts that we really have to go back and do some work on.”

He pointed out that there were more academic competitions being held by the Ministry for the primary schools. This, he noted, included spelling bee, debate and general knowledge competitions among others.

Hon. Walwyn also expressed satisfaction that private schools also participated in the competition.

He expressed that the competition sought to improve the literacy of the Territory’s students and give them something to work towards. “This is all part of a bigger campaign that we have at the Ministry to build the mental capacity of our students,” Hon. Walwyn added.

Schools which participated in the finals of the competition were Bregado Flax Educational Centre; Assemblies of God Cornerstone School; Isabella Morris Primary; Leonora Delville Primary; Agape Total Life Academy; Alexandrina Maduro Primary; BVI Seventh-day Adventist Primary; First impressions Primary; Francis Lettsome Primary; Ivan Dawson Primary; and St Mary’s School.

The finals for the Secondary Schools division Spelling Bee Competition will be held this evening, March 5, 2014 at the same location and starts at 7:00PM.

The three institutions in the secondary category are the BVI Seventh-day Adventist Secondary, the Bregado Flax Educational Centre and Cedar International Schools.
