STATION AVENUE, Road Town, VI- Word reaching our news centre from persons familiar with the matter is that the Chief Social Development Officer, Mrs Annie L. Malone-Frett, has retired from the public service after over 35 years. It is reported that Friday, January 31, 2025, was her last day on the job.

While no acting appointment has been made, the Deputy Chief Social Development Officer, Ms Shirma C. George, is in charge of the Department, according to the same source. The job post has been advertised and recruitment is ongoing.

Social issues on the rise

Mrs Malone-Frett, an indigenous Virgin Islander, oversaw the Department at a time when social issues were bursting at the seams in the Territory of some 35 thousand residents.

There has been a growing homeless population, substance abuse, domestic violence and child molestation in the Virgin Islands. Things have gotten even worse, with the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) blamed for an increase in poverty since local elected officials can no longer help the working poor with grants.

The funds were transferred to the Social Development Department and it became hard to access because of the bureaucratic paperwork that turned off many residents who needed legitimate help. This has contributed to an increase in those at the margins falling through the cracks.

After hurricanes Irma and Maria knocked out the housing stocks by some 75% in 2017, there was an increase in the homeless population and others with mental challenges.

Challenges

Mrs Malone-Frett often complained she did not always have the staff and the budget to keep pace with all the social ills and that the policy that the government complained about in getting help for residents was put in place by it.

The Government has done its part in building many social homes for residents free of cost, along with an increase in Public Assistance Grants to the poor.

Mrs Malone-Frett could not be reached for comments on her retirement plans.

Perhaps you help to create some of the mess that exist and how did you try to improve the work place instead of coming on here being critical. You should be ashamed of yourself if you are a worker, because whatever is happening reflects poorly on you also.

Why is young and old always the issue? There are 60 and 70 year olds in the work place that you 20 year olds cannot keep up with. Number 1 you can't take your eyes off your phones long enough to focus on what your goals are for the day, if you even make goals. I am for if someone is not doing their job, young or old, they should move on, but I am a little tired reading these comments about making room for the young. The young have to educate themselves properly and stand up and take their places. I see youth everywhere I look in Government and the private sector.

What is apparent though is that the young were not taught respect for their elders and love for their fellow men. You generation of young people are toxic and out of place. Hopefully you will live long enough to get to a certain age and find out it is not a disease to be aging, nor is it a disease to want to work because you have the energy, education and zeal to do so, to whatever age you feel. Trust me, the years are going by fast and soon you age bashers will be considered old and the same antagonism you are treating others with will be doubled for you as you train your children to be disrespectful and rude to others.

Is that why people work to pay their bills? Are you the person that was waiting for the position? The problem would be on her superiors for her to be there if she was not doing her job. Stop being a hateful.

Do an audit for the employees who they wrongly dismissed it’s very sad to see them both mistreating their own people and expecting good reviews it’s very distasteful

IThe workplace has always been a place for competent, dedicated individuals who apply their skill , education, and training to the career they selected . Many of the young come unprepared to assume the challenges of their employment. They bring lots of drama and for the most part have no plans on staying at one job for 5 years let alone 25, 30, or even 10 for that matter. The young are attracted to money and deem themselves worthy of more than they are worth. Thank you Ms. Malone for your years of service and your dedication to a cause where the resources are few to non-existant. Dealing with social problems of a community is an insurmountable task that requires support, and from what I have read here today, you never had it. Let them deal with the social problems of the BVI. I know the work, the challenges, and difficult choices that Social Workers have to make. We made them together many years ago, and today I still make them. Unlike you my administration, that exist one short hour away, dread my retirement, and unlike you I work and live in a community where I am appreciated. Enjoy a well deserved retirement and let the words of the ignorant and hateful fall on deaf ears!!!
