Anegadians outraged @ sudden cancellation of Agri. exhibition
The cancellation coincided with the stranding of a contingent of close to 100 farmers who were scheduled to travel to Anegada for Farmers' Week 2015 activities today.
This news site understands that due to mechanical issues with one of the boats, the farmers were left stranded with no indication when they will be transported to Anegada.
This is according to farmer Moviene F. Fahie, who spoke with this news site today when contacted for a comment.
“We here waiting. Two times the boat cancelled. I don’t know when we will be leaving as we still here waiting,” she said earlier today.
Fahie said that she and many others have been waiting at the Ferry Dock since early this morning. They should have been in Anegada from about 8:30 am.
“It is the big ones in charge of this,” she said in disgust. “Where there is no vision the people perish,” she said.
When this news site called the Department of Agriculture, an officer by the name of Michelle Brewley said that a boat had broken down and arrangements were being made to find a replacement so that the farmers could be transported to Anegada. She said that she had no further information at the time.
One woman from Anegada spoke to this news site and explained the difficulty that the cancellation has caused her. “I am a vendor who caters for Agriculture Week. Today we had lunch for the people who are coming on the boat. But we got a call saying that the exhibition has been cancelled until Wednesday,” said Romelia O. Smith.
“They could have tried to find another boat. What are we going to do with all this food? I am not happy about this,” she said.
“If you want to do something badly enough you will find a way. I don’t understand how the persons in the Department of Agriculture could do this,” she said. “We have been working and preparing for weeks. We have been preparing for a long time,” she said.
Another vendor, Anegada resident Dorothy Vanterpool said, “Everything was prepared and now they telling us that the exhibition is now on Wednesday. I was catering for this event,” she lamented. “They knew the boat was not working and still they took it,” she stated.
Contacted for a comment, Information Officer at the Ministry of Natural Resources Feliza D. Fenty said that she was aware of some issues and that the exhibition might be late but she stated she is not aware of any cancellation. She however endeavoured to find out further and communicate with this news site.
