THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI- The Auguste George Airport on Anegada has been reopened due to the fire tender taken back to that island.

The airport was closed at the weekend as the fire tender was taken to Virgin Gorda (VG), since the fire tender stationed there [on VG] had malfunctioned.

According to reports reaching our newsroom, the fire tender designated to Virgin Gorda has since been repaired.

Minister for Communications and Works with responsibility for airports and fire and rescue services, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) announced the reopening of the airport on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Safety of Anegada residents was never compromised’- Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer, in a statement, apologised for any disruption caused. I understand the challenges this has presented, and I want to assure you that every effort has been made to expedite the delivery to minimise further inconvenience.

It is of utmost importance to emphasise that, despite the delay, the safety of our residents was never compromised. Immediate measures were taken to prioritise medical assistance and evacuation for our fellow Anegadians if required,” Hon Rymer stated.

Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) Mr Kurt A.G. Menal had told our news centre on Monday, December 4, 2023, that the relocation of the Anegada airport fire truck was a temporary mitigation measure.

“In the interest of the Territory as a whole and in consideration of the above normal flight schedule in Virgin Gorda over the weekend the option to relocate the appliance from Anegada to VG was taken until the crucial part is replaced,” Mr Menal had said.

Meanwhile, Hon Rymer said the people of Anegada’s understanding and patience during this transitional period in services have not gone unnoticed and he extended his heartfelt gratitude to them for their resilience and cooperation.

As we work together to restore normalcy, please know that your concerns are our concerns, and we are committed to addressing them promptly. Thank you for your unwavering patience, understanding, and solidarity,” Hon Rymer stated.

A news report yesterday said the decision to shift the vehicle to VG was made by the Premier and it was the Deputy Premier who decided that it should be returned. If this is true, I applaud the Deputy Premier for overturning the original decision.

That news report yesterday was wrong. This was purely a technical decision made by the technocrats.

No politics here folks, sorry to disappoint.

This whole situation is laughable, it simply shows we put out machine and drive without any thought to were our destination is and how best to get there.
No one in the decision making body deserves credit for healing a self inflicted wound.
