Andrews overcomes Sir Francis Drake Highway Challenge
With wet roads to traverse during the early part of the 60-mile ride, riders took off on Sunday morning April 22, 2012 from Slaney and continued west to Frenchman’s Cay Junction, returning east and turning around at the Prospect Reef Roundabout and back to start/finish line for one lap or 20 miles.
Andrews and veteran rider Gareth Thomas held the pace together during most of the grueling 60 mile race, with Thomas seemingly giving up before the finish line in a sprint finish that saw Andrews taking victory in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 49 seconds with Thomas just one second behind but also came first in his class.
With a very strong ride put out by the Master’s riders, Hank Verger sprinted in an impressive third place overall and as the first place finisher in his division, with a time of 2 hours, 14:01. Second place Master’s Anthony Spencer clocked 2 hours, 15:26 to earn fourth overall followed by Craig Allan with 2 hours, 15:32 for third place Master’s and fifth overall.
Shaquil Samuel completed his 60 miles in 2 hours, 15:33, earning him sixth overall but second in the Expert division behind Andrews with Richard Morgan finishing as third in Expert division with a time of 2:19:20 and 9th overall.
For the junior’s, Barney Nockolds completed his two laps or 40 miles in 1 hour and 27 minutes as the lone junior while Kay Reddy completed her three laps in 2:35:47 to finish as the lone female and 10th overall.
Though not placing in divisions, Peter Wilmot came 7th overall with at time of 2:15:38, debutant rider Statius Todman 11th overall with 2:37:56, and Antonio Andrews in 12th with a time of 2:38:51.
