ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Students of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School dressed as their favourite fairy tale character as the school held a ‘Character Day’ event last Friday, March 22, 2013.

The event was in keeping with the theme for this school year of 'Creating A Culture of Excellence Through a Reading Renaissance’, which follows that of the Ministry of Education’s Theme as well.

Principal of the School, Mrs Marietta Flax-Headley said each term the school has been having certain activities centred around reading. During the last school term, the school held a literacy night. This time around, students were encouraged to read a book and to come to school dressed as their favourite character of the book that they read.

The students were allowed to wear the costumes for the entire day and this was felt to serve as a form of encouragement to other students who may have picked up an interest in the character and the novel based on what the student was dressed as.

Students dressed as princesses, ogres, super heroes, pirates and villains among others in very colourful costumes and posed in groups for pictures with the novels they had read.

The present school term finishes this Thursday March 28, 2013 before students are sent off on their annual two-week holiday to return on Monday, April 15, 2013.
