Alcoholic deportee claims officers went “ballistic” on him
Ivan Govia, who was deported from the United States a few years ago, was told today that his case was no longer being pursued since the Virtual Complaint was on longer in the Territory and that he had already spent some 9 months on remand. His charges had included criminal trespass, theft, resisting arrest and assault of a police officer.
After being told that his matter was being discontinued and he was free to go Mr. Govia asked the Magistrate what was going to be done about the alleged assault on him by officers and said that he was not even allowed to get a medical record for his injuries. It is not clear if it was police or prison officers Mr. Govia was referring to.
Speaking with a “yankee accent”, Mr. Govia said the officers went "ballistic" on him, which resulted in him receiving a broken leg and wrist. He said his wrist also needed to be re-broken to fix properly. “It has been 10 months and 2 weeks...my hand is still messed up.”
Magistrate Tamia Richards informed Mr. Govia that there were civil remedies that he could pursue and that he could either sue or approach the Complaints Commissioner.
