ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Investigations into a series of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Diamond Estate, Spooners Estate, and Anderson Estate areas have resulted in the arrest of Akim Stevens.

Stevens, who, according to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has no formal address, was arrested and charged with Burglary and Attempted Burglary.

His arrest, the RVIPF said in a statement today, March 22, 2025, followed the circulation of video footage on social media shared by homeowners in the affected communities.

These incidents are being taken seriously- CoP Vanterpool

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool said the police are aware of the videos being circulated showing individuals attempting to enter homes.

“We understand the real fear and anxiety this has caused for residents in the affected communities. Let me assure the public that we are taking these incidents seriously, and this arrest is a direct result of the swift action of the police and the cooperation of the BVI public,”’ she said.

The RVIPF will continue to follow leads while working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice, she assured.

“The safety and peace of mind of our communities remain our highest priority,” Commissioner Vanterpool added.

RVIPF debunks rumours of Stevens’ escape

The RVIPF also addressed false claims circulating in a separate video, which alleged that Stevens had escaped police custody and was later re-captured.

“The RVIPF wants the public to know that this claim is untrue. As a person of interest, Stevens was observed by officers, pursued, and arrested without incident. He remains in police custody pending his appearance before the Magistrate’s Court,” the police statement clarified.

Did you all see the video? He wouldn't leave that young man alone. The guy kept walking away from him but he wouldn't let up. He probably stuck him for him to leave him alone not knowing he stuck him in a bad area

Every time Akim Stevens and people like him come out of jail, they go right back into doing it again when they return to gen. pop. Legislation has to be changed, man, especially for these repeat offenders. Some of them progress into more serious crimes. This society promotes crime, nothing else!

I see that it's only a problem when it reaches our doorsteps.

I understand that people like him are a menace but the justice system doesn't work if all it facilitates is a running cycle of recividism. If he is a non-violent offender, there should programs that keep him "locked up" but at the same time retool him for positive participation in society when he is released. I just look at his face and see someone who society has failed and continues to; our society or another, doesn't matter. We cannot lock ourselves aware from the real world.

I understand what you are saying, but people like Akim do NOT want to work. DO NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT! Mark my words, you will likely see his face and picture in the news again after he is released for these charges, which will be like next year.

There needs to be a penalty for repeat offenders. This boy should get about 10 years for refusing to change his criminal ways.

He look like a real bum. Don’t seem like is the first time he’s been caught stealing either. We need extended jail time for repeat offenders like him cause aint seem like he learn his lesson last time.

This man is a prolific burglar. His profession is thief. Just give him a license and peace.
