Agreement being ‘finalised’ for Cuban medical officials- Premier Fahie
“We are also finalising the agreement so that we can get the Cuban medical officials over. We were given that assurance today in Cabinet, Premier Fahie said on ZBVI 780 AM on April 9, 2020.”
Cuban medical officials will be tested & quarantined
Premier Fahie had previously disclosed that a team at the Ministry of Health and Social Development and the International Affairs Secretariat of the Premier’s Office had actively engaged with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States [OECS] and the Cuban Government to secure resources by requesting 30 medical personnel from Cuba.
The United Kingdom, through the Governor’s Office, has already given the green light for the Cubans to come to the VI.
Hon Fahie has also said the Cuban medical officials will be tested before and when they arrive in the VI and will have to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine before they start working in the Territory.
As of 7:00am on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, Cuba had 726 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 31 deaths, according to statistics published by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
“They will be quarantined for 14 days to make sure that they to go through all the measures that have been put in place,” the Premier stated.
Nothing to hide
He had also said that requesting the help of the Cubans is not because there are more than three COVID-19 cases in the Territory.
The Virgin Islands has only recorded 3 positive cases of COVID-19 and so far two of the three have since tested negative locally.
“We are not hiding anything. What we know, you the people will also know in a timely manner. They are there to help as we continue to be in a proactive mode. Not that something has gone wrong or we have a number of cases — as some persons are saying — we are trying to hide,” Premier Fahie had said on March 31, 2020.
