Advance polling underway!
Advance Polling Day, according to Elections Supervisor Juliette Penn, is held specifically to allow seniors and persons who need extra assistance to vote. It is the day allotted for persons who would need some extra time with the presiding officer or help from a friend.
The Amendments to the Elections Act of 1994 permits a voter who is incapacitated by reason of being an elderly person, illiterate or any physical cause to be able to vote with the assistance of a friend. The term ‘friend’ includes family and relatives. This category of voter has the option to take advantage of Advance Polling Day.
Advance Polling Day is also for election officers and police officers who will be working on Polling Day, Monday, June 8.
Meanwhile, the Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre in Sea Cows Bay had a steady stream of persons considered aged or in need of assistance who turned up to cast their ballot.
They came to vote after being inundated for the past four weeks with a battery of radio advertisements and infomercials and night after night of political rallies in various communities in the district and throughout the territory.
When this news site turned up, the line at the centre was moving somewhat slower than expected with frustrated persons asking how many officials were there to deal with voters.
In addition, there was a bit of confusion as to whose turn it was in the line but eventually this was straightened out among the persons waiting themselves as they ascertained who arrived at the centre before whom.
Following the casting of their votes, the elderly and infirm had to be helped to wheelchairs and into vehicles to make their way home.
There was also an early turnout at the polling station at the House of Assembly chambers in Road Town.
Elections Supervisor Juliette Penn is to host a press conference at 4:15 today to inform the territory about the day’s advance polling and further preparations for Monday June 8, 2015.
