WICKHAM’S CAY I, Tortola, VI- A candlelight vigil inspired by the recent death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge in Guyana is planned for Wednesday, April 30, 2025, which marks the end of Child Abuse Prevention month.

The vigil has been organised by WINBVI and Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park in collaboration with the Association of Guyanese in the BVI and will be held at 6:00 PM.

“We are aware of the many instances of child abuse which has led to the death of numerous children across the region and internationally. Here in the VI, child abuse of many different forms is prevalent.

“This Vigil is for us to send love and light to the families who would have lost a child to abuse, children living with mental and physical scars as a result of abuse and sending a strong message to perpetrators of such acts that we join hearts and hand to call for justice and the cessation of abuse of any form,” WINBVI stated.

‘Powerful gathering’ against Child Abuse

All organisations, clubs, families, and community members have been invited to participate in the vigil “for a powerful gathering in support of Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention.”

The public is asked to bring ribbons, candles, light, and “most importantly, yourselves — men, women, and children are all welcome.

“Together, we will shine a light, raise awareness, and stand united to protect our children and build some stronger communities.”

YES! This vigil is needed right here in the BVI. Male and female children who are beaten, raped and verbally abused, who are too embarrassed to tell of the horrors going on in their homes, schools, or other places. Let's hope this vigil finally pushes these children to talk, and the culprits are brought to justice. AMEN.

    Very sad and heartbreaking.

They burnt the hotel down (I can understand the anger and rage) but they probably destroyed evidence in the process.

It's nice ayo standing in solidarity with Guyana and this horrible tragedy BUT, why in the peak of Child abuse Awareness month, why did it have to come to their tragedy for us to go have candle light vigil? why didn't we do something to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with hundreds of children right here in the BVI who are suffering at the hands of parents, step parents, step siblings, aunt, uncles, cousins and people who are supposed to protect them? They are not dead, they are living with no hope but to tolerate and accept their circumstances. Let's take care of our problem. The child from Guyana was killed by others/strangers, taken from right under her grandmothers nose and other adults who were supposed to be watching her. Pure neglect! Nobody blaming the adults who were in charge of the child. Now a whole nation gone wild! Peace to them. Let's clean our mess. If ayo have the vigil mek sure it is for our children. They are alive!
