A subtle call for independence?

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – “We must start to believe in self-determination, if we want grow up at some point as a Territory. We must not live in our parents' house and continue to accuse them of how they treating us, beating up on us and why they are not giving us….I believe at some point you have to pick up your bags and go through the door,” declared outspoken 5th District Representative Hon. Delores Christopher during her contributions to the debate last evening July 3, 2012 on the motion to review the Pro

The motion was brought forward by Hon. Julian Fraser, RA earlier in the day for a special committee to review the protocols that were signed on April 23, 2012 between Government and the United Kingdom Government. The main objective was to ensure that the Territory was managing its finances responsibly.

However, Hon. Christopher acknowledged that from the heydays, she heard the grumblings of how Virgin Islanders felt they were being treated by the UK and now in 2012 people are still bawling. She charged that it’s time to make a change.

“We must turn around Madame Speaker and put on our leadership caps and think of how we are going to turn around. The point that I was making about Lavity Stoutt is that when he was told that we would no longer be given grant aid, he had a zeal and a determination that we were going to make it and from that day on our Territory began on a path that we came to the point that we flourished and then we wasted, and we may as well admit that we wasted a lot.

“We wasted too much but perhaps it’s not yet too late for us to check, but don’t let us check now and if they smooth us down we say okay we will live with you a little longer if you give us a bigger bedroom. Time to get up and get out the door Madame Speaker that is what I believe,” the 5th District Representative told members of the House.

Hon. Christopher disclosed that there is a "certain word" being discussed on the streets and some think it’s crazy. However, she opined, “we must begin to talk about it, yes its going need a lot of education for our people…we have to face up to the facts.”

However, the district representative acknowledged that in the meantime it would be very good “for us, for our own benefit to put our financial house in order, and this is the effort that is being made.”

Spending freely?

It does seem to Hon. Christopher that the Territory has been spending freely.

“I believe that we have to move beyond the point of just playing blame games. The global downturn did not just start,” she stated.

She pointed to the fact that just before the November 2011 election, a number of contracts were signed and that tied up monies, “and now we are claiming, we would not know where those monies would come from.”

Hon. Christopher disclosed further that just recently she was approached by residents who proclaimed they had contracts to move all sorts of things, which was quite shocking.

“Were we aware at the time that we were in a financial bind Madame Speaker? Apparently not! Even during the Standing Finance Committee, a lot was brought out during the long months of sessions. It was obvious that monies were being spent without having a second thought. Now we seem to be in a crisis situation and in my view Madame Speaker this is not a time to run helter skelter but we have to behave as though we are in a household, stop throwing food through the door, stop wasting the water and everything else and really try to hold it down.”

Strupes.... what independence and servive on what. There is no solid sustainability for this economy, where the consistant revenue is going to come from to support our Independence? not when all of you taking big salaries and perks. Hon. Christopher take on a different platform of good worth that can help us right now. Like (1) the "BANKS", who is spending our money and we aint getting a bit interest back on our savings Accounts but are charging us exetremely high interest on our Loans. (2) A Price Control System in the BVI, especially on consumable Goods & Services (3) Improve more on the Education System at the Pre-Primary & Primary level.

Delores is a bumbling jack*** what's new? Schuups! Her being re-elected only showed what a jackass and waste of time Juggy is/was. I'm an NDP supporter but this woman is clearly off her rockers, always spurting bullshit everytime she speaks. What is she waiting on to pack up and leave? If we go independent she will be one on the first flight out yet she here chatting piss. We make our money and spend it how we want on what we want. We only tied up when it comes to borrowing. If we didnt spend like drunkards we wouldn't be here arguing about UK this and that, we would have $50-$100mil in our reserves to spend on what we want without having to tell UK a damn thing. People need to wakeup. UK only approves borrowing, they don't approve us spending our own money. What better than that you want it? schups.

Socially we are far from being competent enough to be independent. We have no or low standards for everything. Hate educated people. Are not united as a community. Have no unifiying culture. Have a culture of accepted & expected administrative corruption. Have no industries & can't argee on what our industries should be. Have poor education, no military, no police force competent enough to provide stable security.

The Hon. Christopher hint towards independence was perhaps well-intentioned but a little short sighted and overzealous. Yes, at some point children need to leave their parents crib just as birds leave the nest. But children leaving the crib and chicks fending for themselves though a good analogy is not the same as the BVi going independence. The BVI going independent is a giantic, serious, and complex process that should not. be taken lightly. We must and should closely examined the cost-benefit of independence. Can we honestly look ourselves in the mirror today and say that BVI is ready for independence? And if we can say yes to the question, then we should sprint toward independence; the UK will readily grant it to us. But I do not think we are ready. To be independent, the BVI has to be self supporting. And the last time I check the BVI is a have not territory. It is a 59 square mile tropical paradise with sand, sea, and sun and little else. It has no strategic minerals or precious metals that is in demand by other countries for sustaining their economies. Yes, revenues from tourism and financial services provide us with a high quality of life and standard of living. But they are fragile industries that can evaporate in a flash. If they crash what is the plan B? If we need proof why we need to PAUSE and think about independence, look at our sister Anglophone countries up and down the. Caribbean archipelago from Bahamas in the north, Jamaica in the west, Barbados in the east to Trinidad and Tobago in the south. Like the. BVI with the exception of T&T most of these countries have little or no natural resources. Moreover, all of these countries have had. independence for decades(Jamaica the first is celebrating its 50th on Aug 06) but they are still STRUGGLING. Yes, some of. The struggle is due to their lack of unity. But as yet there are no models among the group. Lets look a little closer to home. Were it not for St. Thomas' connection to the US it would be a bigger disaster. The BVI's success is a function of its association with the UK. The political stability and rule of law, coupled with the support and security offered by UK, is.one of the keys for the success of financial.services industry. Lets add.up the pluses and minuses of independence and if the pluses outweigh the minuses go for independence. I think the minuses rule the day. Thus, the bottomline is until a better association emerges lets mend, not end, the association with the UK. Lets work on improving the partnership.

Nothing is wrong with dreaming, but when you are dealing with people's emotions, maintenance and sustainability, one has to think before they speak. Children leave their parents house when they are capable of taking care of themselves, unless they are rude and stupid. So Mrs. CHRISTOPHER, since we are neither, we are staying in our parents house for stability and security.
