'A lot of people not taking sea-level rise seriously'– Dr Shannon Gore
She made the remarks during the public consultation on the Carrot Bay Sea Defence Project held on March 6, 2022, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church Youth Centre.
According to NASA Global Climate Change, sea levels are rising as a result of human-caused global warming, with recent rates being unprecedented over the 2,000 plus years.
She said residents of that coastal village needed to choose between wanting their properties intact or having beaches.
“A lot of people are not taking sea-level rise seriously as it is. Over the past 100 years, yes it’s been rising a couple millimetres, but since 2010/2011 it started accelerating. They are predicting between nine and 33 inches by 2050, that’s 30 years from now, that’s not very far,” she pointed out.
She also said the neighbouring Puerto Rico and the USVI have already started to take it seriously a few years ago.
Risk losing everything
“If you leave it the way it is you’re gonna lose everything on the shoreline. If you wanna know what the different options are, one of the options is you will need the road higher up the hillside. That means you really need to start restoring the shoreline the way it used to be.”
Dr Gore said she has seen photos of the village in the 1950s where vehicles drove on the beach and while everyone wants that back, “times are changing.”
“I am sorry that you may be losing some of your beaches but that is why you want to protect your properties as well. What do you want more: your property or a beach? In 20 years if you just leave it the way it is you’re not going to have anything. You need this and I think this was needed way before [Hurricane] Irma and there are a lot of other places that I see the same thing,” she further remarked.
She told the residents if another category five hurricane comes, the waves are going to come crashing through and cause even more damage.
The first phase of the project, which is to fortify the coastal defence, got the approval from residents and will commence in late March/early April.
Dr Gore was responsible for conducting the Environmental Impact Assessment and replanting the coral reefs in the area that would be otherwise impacted by the upcoming project to further afield.

Talk to the rich corporation owners who continue to make the vehicles that cause the pollution.
Talk to the rich corporations owners who only travel by private jet.
Talk to the rich chemical companies who continue to polite the earth with their toxic waste.
The rich...people who are the cause and have the money to do something about it. Did you see how much money has been made in support of Ukraine just in a mere few weeks? Don't mind the noise there is plenty of money floating around this place.
And when your speaking to there rich ask them why they continue to buy breach front property and tropical islands despite what we all "know" about climate change.
Hope she wasnt drunk !
