A ‘klassy’ look gives Klassique 1st place in 60th Parade - Ms. Hariette Riviera
In their kids sections they had a contingent of some 25 children and in the adult section they had about 50 persons participating. “We had a klassy sexy look. It was something unexpected for us when they called us as winners, we were very shocked, surprised about the whole thing,” noted Ms Riviera.
According to the group leader they have been participating for the past ten years and had come very close to being the champions twice. “Most persons know us under the name SunShine Dancers so it think that’s what throw most persons off track with our new name… under SunShine Dancers we had a second place one year and a third place another year,” she said.
“After listening to Mrs [Eileen] Parsons and hearing her talking about the troupes over the years she said ‘all you normally see is flesh and feathers we need [something] with class,’ with that we just take it and run with it and decided let’s change our name [since] we want something with class and they came up with the name Klassique…” said Ms. Riviera.
She explained that getting out there and doing their best was a major aim of theirs especially as it was the 60th anniversary of Festival in the Virgin Islands. “…and we want to compliment the other troupes who participated and look forward to everybody joining in every year…We are encouraging persons that it’s not a win or lose situation… it’s about going out and having fun at the end of the day,” she said.
Win or lose Ms Riviera said that it is customary that they do something to the benefit of the community at the end of each Festival celebration. Just what they are going to do this year they are still yet to decide.
