$99k for dinner as ESHS students without supplies - Parent
The resident expressed her grievances on the Speak Your Mind TV show aired on May 18, 2013.
Stating that she was fed up, a female caller who claimed to be a single-parent of four children, said she earned $1,800 per month and couldn’t understand why she was required to assist with buying supplies for her children’s teachers.
“I want to know, why after I’m done paying my rent and everything else I have going on, I have to help my children’s teacher buy supplies for her classroom?” the caller questioned.
Host, Julio ‘Sam’ Henry, deduced from the caller’s statements that her children attended the Elmore Stoutt High School and she confirmed that this was so. She also stated that they were in second form.
“I want to know how [Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn] justifies spending $99,000 to sit down and eat and the teachers don’t’ have what they need in their classrooms,” the frustrated caller said.
The caller also stated that while she was in full support of giving teachers their praise, spending $99,000 [on a gala dinner] in these times was not the kind of logic she understood.
“This gala was held in a building that was owned by the government,” the woman asserted, “I don’t understand what happened to this money… If teachers have no supplies to teach children,” she alleged, “how can [the Minister] spend $99,000?”
Hon. Walwyn stated in the House of Assembly on April 30, 2013, that he had no apology for spending some $99,000 on an appreciation dinner and awards ceremony at the Multipurpose Sports Complex on March 16, 2013 that honoured teachers of the Territory.
The woman further alleged that her children's teacher told her that she had not received any assistance from the government to teach students for the past three years.
The caller alleged that her children’s teacher was without printing paper, computer ink, markers and teaching aids for her students.
She suggested that a little service should have been held in recognition of the teachers at an inexpensive place, such as a school, church or even the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall, instead of the grand gala affair that was held.
“That money is now in a septic tank!” the woman exclaimed.

They have to do better than this!!
We must learn to be grateful to the people that have sacrificed much of their lives for our children. Should it be that we turn all public schools into private schools so that we can say pay for your child you ungrateful parent?
Even in private schools parents raise extra funds for equipment and other supplies. If you did not know, education costs money. What parents must do is ensure that their child/children is capitalizing on it.
Minister Walwyn, you are doing a great job!
