ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Motorcyclists continue to be a traffic nuisance especially in the Road Town area of Tortola in the Virgin Islands (VI), according to one of the most feared Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Traffic Officers, Mr Glen Callwood, best known as 'Super Cop'.

Revise Laws - Officer Callwood

Dealing with the issue is an uphill task for the force he opined and noted that one way to clamp down on the offences is in the hands of VI Legislators, “the laws needs to be revised not to broke people’s pocket but to deter them,” he said.

Officer Callwood was at the time speaking on a number of traffic issues prevalent in the territory while on the Thursday, October 24, 2019, edition of JTV's “The Big Story” with host Cathy O. Richards. “For example, the fine for not wearing a helmet is just $50 and I met that there,” he said.

He also alluded to the fact that the present government is considering the call for the allowing bigger CC motorcycles, “The only advice I have for that is, the laws need to be revised," he reiterated.

"Nothing wrong if they say bigger bikes, but in terms of the fees for penalties for them; that needs to be seriously looked at,” he said. The Officer also recommended that an age group for riding bigger bikes should be seriously considered.

Too many complaints about motorbikes

Zeroing in on the many challenges that currently exist with motorcyclists, Officer Callwood said, “We get a lot of complaints about motorbikes, but I would say its not as easy as the general public may think... we can’t just run behind a motorbike, so we have to monitor them... see them later, or we catch them unexpectedly.”

According to Super Cop, some 99% motorcyclists are guilty of using the roads incorrectly, “In my opinion, for my years of experience, I would say 99% of them are not using the road how they ought to. They are using the road carelessly, dangerously and it’s like they have no regards for anyone else who uses the roads.”

He pointed out that motorcycles are governed by the laws equally as with other motor vehicles, “So, in other words, they should be behind a vehicle properly driving in a lane, wearing their helmet, their gears and driving reasonable on the road.”

According to Mr Callwood, motorcyclists cause a scare for many on the roads as a result of the manner in which they swerve in and out of lanes, in front and behind traffic and passing between vehicles.

“Those motorcycle drivers are committing offences, they are reckless and dangerous drivers," he said.

What Callwood is saying is true, but at the same time a young man was kill by a hit and run diver driver and nothing about that was mention in is speech. Not because they may ride incorrectly that don’t give us the right to run them over.

there is no one here that teaches anyone how to ride a bike correctly, not at the DMV that silly test they say they give does not cover anything, also the cops who ride the big bikes don';t even know how to move through slow traffic without putting their feet out and so have no control over the bike.

@vex.. are you for real!! Super cop is right.. truth is we have been singing the same song day in day out and what has really changed?.. legislation for stiffer penalties so need to be instituted if this will be a deterrent to them riding this way and not wearing helmets.. Education is also needed re: safe riding and the police officers also need to do their job to enforce the Law.. our children are dying and it’s time we sort this out.. so sad re: that young man.. and also some of these parents as well need to more proactive to ensure that if their child is using a bike ensure that they have a helmet that could protect in the event of a fall and not some of these crappy looking flimsy helmet I’d see some of them wearing..something has to be done and the time is now:. We always say our children are the future of tomorr but if we r losing our young men like this and also to the prison system what will our future look like for our young men.. and to be honest sorry to say but some of them are so foolish that when you speak to them explaining to them the need for helmets and stop riding crazy, they’d just laugh and say they ok.. smh..so it is our duty to help to protect our children.. so Mr. Minister I implore you to please address this matter urgently..

How many mothers and fathers have lost a child over this trend 'year after year'? What about starting a Mother's & Father's Against... Association in the territory?

Nobody breaks more traffic laws than Glen. Blocking traffic to give tickets instead of pulling people over, driving and talking on his cellphone, no seat belt, illegal parking and more I have witnessed.
He is right that the laws need to be applied equally and needs to learn that he too is not above the law. Also some common sense he needs in enforcing the law.

I don’t know the stats on the number of motorcycle/scooter injuries/death per capita. Nonetheless, regardless of the number, one death or major injury is too many. Too many young men are dying in the prime of their lives to preventable accidents, ie, deliberately violating traffic laws. Adhering to rules of the roads can prevent deaths/major injuries. Further, not adhering to the rules of road pose a risk to violators, along with other law abiding motorists and pedestrians. Additionally, injuries resulting from preventable accidents place an unnecessary burden on the medical system. Obey the rules of the road and stay alive, avoiding major injuries that may have an adverse impact on one for the rest of one’s life. Glen “Super Cop” Callwood may be derided for his strict, no nonsense enforcing of the traffic laws. However, if his approach save but one (1) life, is his action serving the public good? Yes.

Everyone is to their own opinion, we are blaming this person or the Government is not doing this or the POLICE is not doing what they are paid to do. What I know is the BVI is a very lawless society, only when something happens or affect us some of us know to criticize the system and have nothing good to say or at lease come up with a solution. If there were another 11 cops like Officer Callwood on the road daily doing their job, I bet things would be different as it relates to our very serious and very embarrassing lawless traffic situation we have in the BVI. I am a B V Islander and have travel the world and even to most the neighboring Caribbean islands. And to be honest when it comes to traffic we are the worse. Our PARKING is the worse ever, I had a friend visiting from one of the other islands and could not believe the parking and other traffic situation in the BVI. Especially people PARKING in the middle of the PARKING LOT blocking persons who are correctly parked. This is a very big problem that needs to be address. We were some place and witnessed some tourist in a rental being blocked by some inconsiderate driver for over 30 minutes. We have a long way to go as it relates to our traffic situation in the BVI. We got to get very serious and it starts with the Government and our outdated LAWS and PENILTIES and ENFORCEMENT. Another point is there are too much vehicles for our roads which is in desperate need of repair and widening where necessary. I will end there and await the criticism.
