TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- The [British] Virgin Islands Government has announced that significant progress is being made in the ongoing airport development project where the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) has opened tenders for the development of a business case that it says is crucial to the project’s success.

Following a recently concluded Request For Proposal (RFP) process, the tendering process has attracted interest from both local and international firms and saw a total of eight (8) bids being received and publicly opened on January 4, 2024, the BVIAA said in a release on January 4, 2024.

Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) expressed his satisfaction with the level of enthusiasm and interest displayed by potential partners and underscored the Government's unwavering commitment to the airport's development.

"We see this as a significant step in realising our vision for the expansion of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport and the Territory on a whole. The overwhelming responses from reputable firms, both locally and internationally, affirms the importance and potential of this project," Honourable Rymer said.

Evaluation of tenders to come next - BVIAA

The BVIAA added that the next phase of the project involves a thorough evaluation of the tenders received, with the aim of entering into a contractual agreement with the successful bidder in the coming weeks.

BVIAA Board Chairman Mr Theodore Burke, emphasised the Authority's dedication to keeping the airport development project at the forefront of priorities until it is realised.

"It is our intention to maintain momentum on the airport development project until its fruition. The public opening of tenders today marks a significant leap forward in this process as we move closer to solidifying the next steps in the airport's development," Mr Theodore Burke said.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) in his 2024 budget address said for the VI local industries to continue growing, it needs the supporting infrastructure. "The upgrade and expansion of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport to handle increased passenger arrivals and larger aircraft that are capable of bringing in visitors from further distances is critical to the further development of our tourism industry,” he added.

BVIAA did not disclose the names of the companies that have submitted bids or say exactly what the project would entail.

The bid evaluation process is expected to be completed in the upcoming weeks, after which the successful bidder will be awarded a contract.

More 'feasibility studies' - it seems every government rotation we the people pay for consultants to write a 1million dollar report on the airport - getting to the point we just need to do something or leave it alone. Government loves wasting our money - lets spend it on the education of our youth.

    1. Was the RFP made public? What was the scope of work? What was the anticipated budget? The article suggests this information is under wraps? Why?
    2. Where’s the money for this work coming from? A few years ago, bids were in the $ 200 million plus, or going on 50% of the Territory’s GDP. A 20 year $200 mill loan at 7% means a monthly payment of $1.5 million/month. Works out to be $ 375 per person, assuming 1000 pssengers departed per week. Direct flights to mainland already run as high as $1,200. Seems dubious to think a family of four won’t mind paying an extra $1,500 to fly directy here.
    3. Probably most important: has the Territory learned how to properly manage projects of this nature to get it done on time and on budget? What measures have ben taken to ensure this is the case?

Mista Kye saar, permission please to express my views. It looks like we are always putting the cart before the horse saar. The airport expansion is a wonderful idea and will certainly be beneficial to the territory. But Saar 1. Wah kinda abortion road (with craters and swimming pools) the people driving on to get to their destinations, and on their journey enjoying the lovely smell of sewerage, over grown bush and garbage. I assume all of the above is the unforgettable unique attractions the BVI offers? 2. We the tax payers live here and would really like to enjoy the benefits of our taxes. Please saar, fix the road cause soon I will be opening a driving school with special skills training because that is now a requirement to navigate these road. To get through Main Street alone I feel like James Bond on a mission. I can't imagine the folks in East and West. We shall continue to pray for knowledge, compassion for your people, wisdom and common sense for the leaders of these beautiful Virgin Islands cause I just have me high school diploma but I know that the roads sewerage and water first, then the airport. Ayoo come for me.

The airport does not need to be extender right now. More important issues need addressing.

Fix the schools , roads , sewage , and Lockwood Pond first . Anything else is just moronic and invites MORE corruption.

100% correct. Fix the infrastructure first. Raw sewage being pumped into the water just west of Prospect Reef and other locations, roads are a disgrace and ALWAYS have been. No water most of the time for East End and Sea Cows Bay residents, it really is a mess. With intelligent, non-corrupt leaders it all can be fixed.

Do not make the same mistakes as Dominica and Antigua, they both awarded major infrastructure contracts to the Chinese. The Chinese will be cheap, and will no doubt do a good job; however, they will bring in their own workers and use it to advance their interests in the region.

@ Caution. That's exactly what we want, a good and SAFE job at a competitive price. The only things locals should be doing is providing support services (heavy equipment, catering, accommodation etc.) under Chinese sub-contracts and supervision. Under no circumstances should locals be contracted directly by government to build and pave any part of that runway extension; or build any part of the terminal extension. Our very lives and national financial viability may depend upon it.

You clearly know nothing about China, ask people who live in Bhutan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Nepal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, Dominica, or Antigua to name a few.

The T. B. Lettsome's Airport extension is necessary, but so do all the other areas of our infrastructure developments.
Even now more urgent than the needed expansion of the T. B. Lettsome's Airport is the problematic acts that are plaques with misteries, and lack basic needs unreasonable by a large percentage of people in the BVI because of minimum wages being paid to many.
It is not hard to recognize this facts, that when income is small, and basic prices are high at the same time, that, that is a double whammy among other pressing problems, to name a few.
In short, be it known that in the mind of some to hurry to race ahead, the front foot needs the back foot in order for meaningful infrastructural development to happen void of serious consequences for the citizens of the BVI, especially the youths and senior.
Like I have typed above I will type below:

    FRONT FOOT NEEDS BACK FOOT.

If they consider a bid from CCCC - Chinese Communications Constuction Company, they all should be fired.

local companies? I am sorry to say but I don't think we have a company capable (and independent enough) to bid on this...
    • @SMH (05/01/2024, 20:07) Like (4) Dislike (0) Reply
I agree. Local companies were given opportunities to fix and build roads that is only couple meters long and cant even get that done properly. Between bad drainage, potholes etc, there is no way they can build an efficient and stable runway to last years without damage.

Its a no for me. If that happens, i will still continue to fly through St. Thomas
