ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Some seven (7) students of the Elmore Stoutt High School are to be expelled. This is according to Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, who informed the House of Assembly today, Tuesday November 19, 2013.

It is believed that the Minister may have buckled under pressure from teachers of the school who had expressed concern for their safety and threatened industrial action if the issues of undisciplined students at the school were not drastically addressed.

The teachers had also informed Virgin Islands News Online that they were very displeased with their meeting with the Minister on Monday November 18 as he was insisting that he was not going to expel any students. The upset teachers also alleged that Minister Walwyn was not prepared to listen to their concerns and were depending on a follow up meeting with the Minister today to determine their next course of action.

Hon. Walwyn told the HOA today that he has accepted the recommendation made by Principal Wade W. Tobin to expel seven disruptive students from the Elmore Stoutt High School.

He said it was with a heavy heart that he had come to such a decision as it was against his belief but that he was doing it in the best interest of the entire school body.

The Minister said there were some 14 students who were placed on behaviour control; however, the seven to be expelled refused to abide by the terms of their agreement.

Teachers at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) had threatened industrial action following developments that occurred on November 15, 2013 where a student allegedly confronted the principal in a threatening way after being handed a period of suspension. There was also an incident outside of the school compound on the same day where a number of male students were involved in disorderly behaviour.

No one can take the place of these student's parents but like it or not Fahie was about the betterment of the people & students. Myron is better at PR but on the ground what is happening is no where close to his PR campaign.

I agree with Peaches!!! They need Jesus!!! Love begins in the home and so does behaviour!!! How are they going to control themselves in public places if they cannot control themselves in their own home environment!!!

The question is.... if they are expelled... where do they go from there? It can be a downward scale for some children...so far as ending up on the wrongside of the law then prison!!

Expelling I agree when it comes to threatning behaviour....no one should put up with that!!! Send them to war to exert some energy!!

That's not correct in any way, shape or form and u whoever u r know it is not so. I am not political but these blogs appeared firmly political. Fahie had his trials and tribulation at the schools u name it from BFEC to ESHS primary as well. There were fights then and there will continue to be until. Parents, teachers and ministers must come together to chart a way forward. When this is agreed upon then everyone must stand behind the statutes, rules, procedures and policies bar none. I would suggest a school board be put in place to assist all parties involved>. The principal would still be in charge of running the school. my way to contribute. Making false and inaccurate statements is downright wrong. Try help the people that needs help and that is the minister, the school administrators, the students and the parents. be constructive for goodness sake.

You may be correct in that Government is to blame for spoiling people. If people had to work hard (like long ago) for what they need and want and not get hand-outs they would not have time to indulge in the foolishness they do, like long ago.

Apple Pie, What does undisciplined children disrupting the operations of an entire school body has to do with Mr. Fahie, Min. Walwyn and the principal. They do not want to learn, why keep them there to make children and be grand-daddies in the school, thus preventing those who want to learn. When they come to their senses they will at the late stage realize the importance of early childhood education, but then it will be time for them to take afternoon classes and pay for what they could have gotten free.

Neither Walwyn or Fahie have served education well. Remember, it was Fahie who was was quoted in a June 20, 2011 Platinum News article saying that "I don´t deal with the day to day operations of the Department [of Education]." That quote was given while he was in fact the Minister of Education.

What will happen when these young men are thrown out on the street? How old are they? Are w e encouraging more crimes? Virgin Islanders you are needed in the teaching profession. One must be willing to try and help these young men not call to have them thrown out of school . It sounds like the money is more important than the students. We will watch to see what follows.

Why don't you open a school for these young criminals? Every society has deviants that no matter how you try, cannot be assimilated into the system. These guys were warned time and again. Are you waiting for what happened in the US where children come into school and start killing people to say "oh shucks, let's pray for the families of the poor teachers" Parents need to take responsibility for their children and stop creating little monsters for others to deal with.

Enough is enough. We as a people need to wake up. Some of us parents know our children in the schools giving the system real problems and what we do we shield them. Well its time someone stand up and the teachers did. What we wanna wait for one of them to really hurt a teacher or student. Hard luck an example had to be set and to bad it started with your son. How much longer did you think the principals, teachers and student could have taken. Enough is Enough. If you were in their position what would you have done.

So sad that locals feel it's allright to refer to others as "Garrot", "Antiguan", or "Island man/People", and I'm from right here. An individual should be judged by their personality/actions not stigmatized by where they are from or where they grew up. Whether with pressure from the Teachers or not, the fact that the Hon. Walwyn has now decided to suspend 7 students as recommended, should be received more positively - and less time should be spent blaming and comparing, but more time should be invested in being supportive or better still, offering workable solutions. God's willing, an alternative plan can be identified (whether by benchmarking other High Schools that have done so successfully or other positive medium) to help these students. As someone who had a son attending the ESHS, I can say firsthand that there is a lot of negative peer pressure there ... Children who cut class to gamble on the compound, I've seen boys throwing paper in the classroom while the teacher is there, and there are other things that go on... Some of these children receive training and teaching at home, however, some bow to the pressure due to poor choice or bullying. So some parents are trying and there are others who set a bad example by going to the school and cursing the teachers in front the children. Others talk badly about the teachers or the Education system/Ministry in their presence. These are behaviors that parents should never engage in as it could lead to their child/children not having respect for those in authority. Some children have gotten into smoking, which can lead to deterioration of the brain cells, and addiction, which takes away the desire to learn, leads to aggression and involvement in criminal behavior. For those who have not used marijuana before, the secret is to never touch it. The symptoms and effects I've named are just a few. Marijuana is very addictive on males especially and can lead to marijuana psychosis and most devastatingly, to the use of other more mind-altering drugs.
