ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- At least fifty-three new cancer cases were detected in the Virgin Islands (VI) in 2024, Medical Director of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Dr Domnick Frazer has said.

Dr Frazer revealed this during a cheque presentation ceremony of funds raised during the 2024 CIBC Caribbean Walk for the Cure campaign on March 27, 2025, at the bank’s Retail Banking Hall.

A total of $67,000 was raised, and $10,000 was presented to National Epidemiologist Ms Harmony Brewley-Massiah for data collection to ensure more comprehensive tracking and research into cancer trends within the VI.

The other $57,000 was presented to the BVI Cancer Society.

Colorectal, breast & prostate cancers most detected- Dr Frazer

The VI’s cancer registry and the associated research initiatives commenced this year. This is a collaborative effort between the National Health Insurance and the BVI Cancer Society.

Detailing the ceremony’s events on April 2, 2025, Dr Frazer- in a press release from the bank- said the research and analysis initiative has begun at NHI.

“We are trying to promote regular annual checkups. We had at least 53 new cases last year, and the three leading causes were colorectal cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer,” he said.

Get tested early

Dr Frazer explained that while these three cancers, once diagnosed early, are treatable, persons present themselves at very late stages of the disease.

“So we want to promote screening and early detection,” he said.

Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) revealed earlier this year that 462 cases of cancer were recorded by NHI from 2016 to 2022, with an average of 14 deaths per year.

NHI needs to cover annual pap screening for women. Reducing covered screenings to once every 3 years is a gamble. Putting this measure in place was a slap in the face. Additionally, even though high risk women should be covered, it’s a fight to have it done because providers claim that NHI makes it very difficult based on the red tape that has been implemented. It is often requested that women pay out of pocket then try to claim it from NHI. Women’s lives matter. Allow us to have access to annual cervical cancer screenings. If one life is lost due to late diagnosis, it’s one too many.

I challenge policy makers at NHI and government to fix the wrong that they have done. #screening saves lives

Are we looking at the Covid-19 vaccination status of these patients? This is no longer conspiracy theory or crazy talk - there is a documented connection between the vax and cancer. https://youtu.be/6DtWo3iO_X0?si=A_EjIknYCMNGTu17

Here we have it! Instead of passing legislation to protect the population from the wholesale poison on the supermarket shelves, they are in HOA beating their chests about tobacco which hardly any local uses. Where are the lung cancer cases? Oh? None? Strange! Eat all the cup of noodles, sausage, spam, corned beef, injected chickens, fake pumped up salmon etc. that you want, just keep away from those cigs! Nobody cares about truth/facts anyway, just what makes them feel good. Happy Friday!

So wait, no lung cancer? So what was all the noise in the house by Hon. Turnbull and Hon. Penn touting medical numbers? Are you telling me that they just went on google for information trying to sound bright in the house instead of getting the local data that matters and trying to actually help the people that need the help? Wow.

Are the names of patients being given to the cancer society or just statistics? I don't know if BVI have a protected health information law and HIPAA where your medical information cannot be disclosed without your consent. I was home one time for vacation and had to go to Peebles emergency room. Days later I was surprised to learn from someone who I had not mentioned my private situation with knew some specific details of my visit to the hospital, which clearly came from someone who either tended to me or had access otherwise. I could not believe it.

I am not against research and data sharing, but I only hope that my name is not shared with anyone without my permission.

we only stopped open dump burning a year ago. Cancer takes time to develop. How many of these cases are from west (downwind) of almost 2 decades of open pit burning?
