ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- 42 businesses were showcased at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) Youth Business Expo held at Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town on Friday, December 1, 2023.

The Youth Business Expo, which focused on youth between the ages of nine to thirty years, was held under the theme ‘Youth Entrepreneurship: The Cornerstone of a Diverse Economy’.

The participants of the Expo were categorised into two age brackets: Aspiring Youth-preneurs from ages nine to seventeen years; and Youth Entrepreneurs from ages eighteen to thirty years.

DYAS applauded

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL), speaking at the event’s opening ceremony, applauded the vision of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, which she said has been seeking to, through the funding allocated to them, shore up the opportunities in youth development and sports.

“Truly, through this Youth Business Expo, we are hitting on one of the four focal points, when we look at the youth mandate across the Commonwealth, with this year being designated as the year of youth, there are four main pillars we have been seeking to ensure that we look at. These areas include entrepreneurship, employment, education, and the environment.”

Hon de Castro added that the Youth Expo creates opportunities for young people to not only be employees but to also be employers.

She said there were entrepreneurs “as young as 8 and 9 years old sitting and seeking to present their business” to the community and that she was happy that all of the main islands were represented at the exposition.

Youth entrepreneurs encouraged to apply for trade licenses

James Richards, Executive Officer of the Department of Trade, Investment Promotion and Consumer Affairs, disclosed that 42 businesses were showcased at the Youth Business Expo.

He encouraged those businesses without a trade license to get one.

“You are never too young to start a business, you are never too old to start a business. I see young persons here who are willing and who are capable and who are creative to come out and then to showcase their businesses and the business ideas that they have, and we need a lot more of those in the territory,” Mr Richards stated.

Mr Richards also encouraged the seasoned youth entrepreneurs to keep on with their ambitions and to never give up when the going gets tough.
