ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our newsroom is that the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports has purchased four school buses.

It is believed the buses are to assist in transporting school children who attended the demolished Althea Scatliffe Primary School aka ‘Mighty Might Scatliffe’ and are now relocated to other schools in the area.

There have been 3 out 4 buses already on the island, with the fourth one expected in the coming weeks, according to someone familiar with the shipment.

The same person noted that it would see savings for taxpayers, as the private sector bus drivers' cost was not sustainable for taxpayers.

New school coming soon

It is unclear when construction will begin at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School; however, Education Minister Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) secured a massive deal last year to have Green VI build a brand new Althea Scatliffe school as a joint public-private partnership. Engineers in a report had said the school had serious structural challenges.

It is unknown when the school buses will be launched; however, the Government has been advertising vacancies for bus drivers.

Efforts to reach Hon de Castro for a comment were unsuccessful.

It this a factual or an emotional response?

Remember that the taxi drivers are business people, who have to pay for gasoline and maintenance and repairs for their vehicles. If you were them, you need to ensure that your operations are not just cost-effective but more importantly profitable. Otherwise, why be in business?

Why is the government getting into the school bus business when it seems to be very inefficient at running the greater affairs of the country (roads, water, electricity, etc.)? Why not simply negotiate better contracts with the private sector and stimulate the local economy?

Also, on a related note... when these little Road Town ferry buses keep transporting the tourists along with the locals through town FOR FREE, who cries for the taxi operators being cheated out of the needed tourist dollars (which means nothing for the local economy since the tourists just take those saved dollars back to the ship and on to another venue)? Are we making informed and sensible decisions?

Clearly you are a taxi driver reading your comments! Some taxi drivers might be business people but the majority that I meet would prefer to sit around playing dominos and refuse jobs if they don't think they are big enough. IF they were prepared to work full time and provide a decent service then your argument holds. Until then I'm afraid government need to provide the affordable service that locals and tourists need without us being held hostage to the insane taxi prices.
A taxi driver prepared to work for 8 hours a day can charge fair fares to us as they are spreading the maintenance and repair costs. A taxi driver that only wants to work an hour or two and doesn't want to take a small job as it will stop them chatting and playing dominos can't cover their costs without charging a huge amount. That's business and we thank government for stepping in to stop us being ripped off.

While I acknowledge that taxi drivers are business owners with legitimate expenses to cover, there's a pressing issue that cannot be ignored: a growing number of parents in our territory are struggling to afford the current bus fees for their children's school transportation. This isn't merely an anecdotal observation; I've personally witnessed numerous primary school students resorting to catching rides, putting themselves at risk by accepting rides from strangers.

It's particularly concerning that despite being aware of these financial hardships faced by many families, some taxi drivers have shown little to no willingness to adjust their rates or consider offering more affordable options for those less fortunate. This lack of flexibility has created a dangerous situation where children's safety is being compromised due to economic constraints.

Given these circumstances, I support the government's initiative to intervene in school transportation. It's heartbreaking to see young children forced to rely on potentially unsafe means of getting to school, and this situation demands action. The well-being and education of our youth should be a priority for our community.

"these little Road Town ferry buses" have been a godsend for those who need to get around and can't afford the $20+ fee by greedy taxi drivers just to go a few minutes down the road. Or don't want to wait an hour while you finish your game of dominoes.

while you raise valid points about the business aspects of taxi operations and questions about government efficiency, I believe you overlook the immediate safety concerns and the social responsibility we have towards our children. Yes, taxi drivers need to maintain profitability, but there's also a need for community-minded solutions in critical areas like children's education and safety.

If it is the safety of the children you are worried about don't buy buses that have to be boarded in the middle of the road. Can we get anything right? School buses great. Safe school buses where you board at the curb better. These are another joke on the VI people.

Have mercy on us Lord. In 2025 we bought buses with the entrance on the traffic side. You mean you all couldn't order busses where the kids would get in on the left side rather than being in traffic to get in and out of the damm bus?

GOOD MOVE. Now let's clean up the school ground so the surroundings looks like a learning institution , remove the car wash from the rear and put a proper entry and exit system in place. The property is like a dump. I hope those buses wont be along the school perimeter impeding traffic.

So which smart person in the procurement department decided that it would be safe to CONTINUE to purchase buses which offload our children into the middle of the damn road.
You can easily buy buses which offload to the left side, just gotta look for them.
Whats it gonna take, for someone to be run down before you see sense ??

Rebuild the Althea Scatliffe school you fools.Buying buses to carry the people’s children on these treacherous roads especially when it rains. This Government has no boasted direction, This tells me they have no intention to rebuild the school in the capital.
Why are persons castigating the taxi drivers ? Everyone has to make a living. S anyone criticizing your profession?

I hope you have a proper maintenance plan in place. Remember years ago Crash Dummy ran out of brakes with them same buses. Remember the other guy ran out of brakes with them same buses. Be mindful and careful what you putting in place. You see, Sharie don't have any children, Jamal don't have any and Orlandette daughter don't have to drive in them. Becareful what you are asking for. Make sure safety protocols are in place. Make sure a proper maintenance plan is in place. Make sure the drivers are legit and not high on weed or drinking alcohol.

They will last as long as the road paving equipment Mark bought from China a few years ago. Get out of your feelings and think clearly. Some things are better left to the private sector. Government employees do NOT take care of anything. It will cost more than the current arrangements and in 2yrs the buses will be at the admin complex lot jacked up waiting for parts. Screenshot this comment and save for a later date.

How in the world is this going to save money, you have to take into account the cost to maintain these vehicles, you have to hire drivers, fuel at lease twice a week. This is just another blatant waste of money.Build the God-dam school back. This is the worst government ever, you guys make me shit with shame,I will never again vote in this place,Unless I'm casting a vote replacing the Deputy government every four years.
