ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) has confirmed that there are now two active cases of COVID-19 in the [British] Virgin Islands.

This comes after the announcement made on December 7, 2020, of an imported case discovered while in quarantine aboard his yacht.

According to a press release from Government Information Service today, December 9, 2020, the second newly imported case was also detected while in quarantine aboard his yacht after completing the fourth-day testing that is required as part of the entry protocols for incoming travelers to the Territory.

Contact tracing

Honourable Malone stated during a COVID-19 Update interview on December 7, 2020, that the Public Health Unit and BVI Health Services Authority team have been actively engaged in providing rigorous support and that contact tracing has commenced.

“We are pleased that all of the protocols have been properly followed so that the contact tracing is not extensive throughout the Territory,” Honourable Malone said. He also emphasised that all incoming persons are subjected to a mandatory quarantine period of 4 days and all violators will be tracked, traced and fined.

2 active COVID-19 cases

The total number of tests conducted in the [British] Virgin Islands to date is now 8,846 with 75 total COVID-19 positive cases confirmed; 72 recoveries, two active and 1 death.

Phase Three of the border reopening has commenced and the public is again reminded to comply with all health and safety measures that include hand washing, wearing of face masks in public spaces, maintaining 6 feet from others outside of your households, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, keeping hands out of your face and limiting large gatherings, especially during the upcoming holiday season.

Persons who are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 are encouraged to contact the Medical Hotline at 852-7650 for medical advice and testing. Common symptoms include fever, cough, headache, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, muscle aches, or difficulty breathing.

It seems strange that these cases are detected on the second test and not the test given on arrival. False positives?

So these individuals came in via EIS. Met with locals (customs/immigration officers, welcome staff and others), travel in a taxi to SCB for covid testing, then to their destination. They checked into the charter boat company, registered, paid and assigned their boat. They may had a full staff/caption on board. Therefore, all these people have to be tested. OMG!

What about getting the vaccine for seniors and frontline - healthcare/immigration/etc. workers. The vaccines is already being used by Britain. Instead of talking $hi! about independence that we are not ready for! Because if you were ready for independence you would have already considered putting the matter out for referendum, you would have already established a means for national security!

2 active cases so far, both currently in quarantine. As long as we keep detecting these cases and the correct procedures are followed subsequently, there should be no need to panic.
I hope as well that the data is being collated so that we will know whether protocols and procedures need to be adjusted accordingly. With it being a novel virus, adaptability to changing situations is key and management and assessment of the data is crucial.

I know a couple of friends doing quarantine aboard a yacht. I told them that, for the cab ride from the airport, people from different families were not to mix, and to be sure to point that out. When they did, at the airport, the taxis refused to take just them and insisted another two people, both local, ride along. How does that make sense?

Can Malone tell the public what's happen to the regular flu please? Does it exist anymore or covid took over the flu market. Asking for a friend.

All persons coming to the Virgin islands must have a negative test before entering. Enforce that.

They do... Then that person walks in to a toxic American airport and gets on different toxic American planes before they arrive.
4 day quarantine is not enough regardless of a negative test in their country of origin.

This is a very good time to implement one family per taxi. If you travelled on the plane together then you take the taxi together. No one else allowed in the same taxi travelling with you. Hon Fahie, please take that piece of advice.

The one thing that concerns me the most is our older generation.
They have been through too much over the last few years. We all remember the funerals after Irma. Them passing of broken hearts and loss of hope.
What a disservice it would be to those who lived through those dark painful times, the survivors, only to be let down by their own government and be taken by a virus because politicians and some who were never born here want to make money.
We need to protect them! Let them enjoy a Christmas with their families, not alone in a hospital bed.
