2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season ends with 20 named storms
With a total of 20 named storms, this season ranks fourth since 1950 in terms of storm numbers. Seven of these storms became hurricanes, and three reached major hurricane status.
There were also multiple hurricane landfalls across Mexico, including Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm which devastated Acapulco and killed dozens.
National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan says 2023 shows the storms can affect "just about everywhere.”
VI was affected by TS Philippe
The Virgin Islands was spared of hurricanes but was affected by Tropical Storm Philippe which passed close to the [British] Virgin Islands on October 3, 2023, causing major flooding in the Road Town area, rockslides, power outages and damages to roads.
The 2023 Atlantic seasonal activity fell within the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s predicted ranges for named storms and hurricanes in the August updated outlook. It was also close to the predictions made by Colorado State University.
