NANNY CAY, VI- The organisors of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival has apologised for the postponement of the 2020 event originally slated for March 30 to April 5, 2020.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) in a March 13, 2020 statement on Government’s response to COVID-19, said Cabinet decided that the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival and the 2020 Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival be postponed and that “other future mass gatherings will be further reviewed at a meeting of the National Emergency Operations Centre on Monday, 16th March.”

In a press release on March 14, 2020, the organisers of the regatta said, in light of the latest statement made by the Government of the Virgin Islands regarding measures being taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BVI Spring Regatta Board has been instructed to postpone the 2020 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival as a matter of public health and safety.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and the event will be rescheduled when it is prudent to do so, and Government protocols permit. “

It said everyone is encouraged to take every necessary precaution given and adhere to measures in place until the situation has improved.

“Updates will be published on our website at www.bvispringregatta.org as information becomes available.”

Too bad. It's difficult to postpone a regatta of this size for more than a few weeks. Many of the visiting racing yachts and support vessels normally leave the northeast Caribbean by mid-April for the races downisland in Antigua. Additionally the bareboat charter companies in the BVI will also have great difficulty re-scheduling the 1 week charters for the bareboat races to whenever the postponed 2020 Spring regatta is actually sailed.

The Regatta, just like everyone else is affected so we can stay as safe here as possible. Cruise ships, airlines, ferries, taxi's, businesses, etc, are affected and have to change their schedules no matter how difficult. No one is better than the next or have it more difficult than the rest. We all feel it, but we might have a fighting chance if we keep outsiders away until this VIRUS is under control. It may take months, but we live longer. Please everyone stop whining and support our leaders in charge for ensuring our safety. We all have a hand in this so let's start thinking of what we can do to help OURSELVES, because Government cannot do it all. Thank you!

The entire WORLD knows about this virus. Regatta is no exception to the rules. In an emergency such as this, everyone is taking a hit. The world does NOT evolve around Regatta. Go sit down!
