ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands' Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has urged communities and individuals to prioritise hurricane preparedness as the 2023 Hurricane Season gets underway.

“Of course, the communities have to prepare themselves. You know, everybody in their own community, individual households, have to make their preparations and I urge them to do that right now. And of course, the government as well have been going about the business of cleaning up the place,” he said.

The Premier made the state when questioned by the media during a June 2, 2023, press conference.

Governor John J. Rankin, CMG in a previous statement has also warned that the territory can anticipate as many as six hurricanes during the current hurricane season while adding that while there is a likelihood of possible hurricanes, it was a lower-than-average number for the usually busy hurricane season.

Cleanup campaigns started

Dr the Hon Wheatley said the local subject Minister has already mobilised a cleanup campaign, including getting all the derelicts removed and trimming of trees, cleaning of ghuts.

“But we all need to get prepared, of course, we know what happened in 2017. So we can be caught flat-footed in the event that we have a hurricane, of course, we pray that we don't have any impacts but in the event we do, we should be prepared,” he said.

I am not going to get caught like I did when Irma blew through. Emergency survival bag is packed, stacking up on non perishable foods, bottled water, Flash lights, batteries and a first aid kit. I also invested in a generator that will be delivered on Monday.

I hit dislike but I caught your sarcasm after the fact. That is in fact the message the government is sending.

Not only do we have to worry about hurricane season, we are now dealing with the Canadian Wildfires wind that is blowing smoke up and down the East Coast.
