GREENLAND, Tortola, VI- The British Virgin Islands Cricket Association (BVICA) has commenced its inaugural Umpire Certification Programme, registering 20 participants for this transformative 18-month initiative.

Designed to elevate the standards of cricket officiating in the territory, the programme is being expertly facilitated by renowned West Indies umpire trainer Mr Peter Nero.

The programme recently kicked off with its first session held via Zoom, where 15 enthusiastic participants attended a comprehensive 3.5-hour training. The session covered a wide range of topics, including the achievements and vision of the BVI Cricket Umpires, an introduction to the art of umpiring, essential umpire equipment, and the duties of an umpire.

Mr Nero, a highly respected figure in the cricketing world, brings a wealth of experience to the programme, ensuring participants receive top-tier instruction and practical knowledge.

'Pivotal moment for cricket in VI'

Speaking on this initiative, Vice President of the BVI Cricket Association, Mr Richard Francis, shared:

“This programme marks a pivotal moment for cricket in the British Virgin Islands. Umpires are the backbone of the game, and this initiative reflects our commitment to developing the sport with professionalism and integrity.

"By equipping these individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to officiate at the highest levels, we are not only enhancing the quality of local cricket but also paving the way for our umpires to make their mark regionally and internationally,” Mr Francis stated.

Cricket is an international sport, even the USA now has a team and recently hosted T20 Matches. Here is a history fact for you, the BVI once had a great team up until mid 1960's and was the best and won several matches both in the VI and threw out the Region. If your great grandparents or an elderly family members or friend still alive ask them.
